Bill Doba's Legacy in Cougar Football | Spokane News

Bill Doba, the legendary Washington State football coach and defensive architect who led the Cougars to national recognition and left an indelible mark on Pullman, passed away at 85 after a recent stroke. His five-year head coaching run (2003–2007) included a thrilling debut season with 10 wins and a Holiday Bowl triumph over Texas, propelling WSU to 9 nationally. Before coaching, he engineered the iconic “Palouse Posse” defense in 1994 and helped guide the program to Rose Bowl appearances in 1997 and 2002. Even after stepping down, Doba remained a cherished figure, regularly attending games and raising the Ol’ Crimson flag — his legacy forever woven into the heart of Cougar Nation.
