TheTakeOff | Billy Phakathi is an ex offender who was released in October 2020. He was convicted and sentenced to prison in 2005 after committing rape (2 counts of rape), house breaking, possession of fire arm, robbery. He is now working on registering an NPO that deals with GBV . He wrote to us with a few concerns. He was sentenced to 30 years 9 months , he served 15 of those years. He is also author of the book, ‘Experiences of a black woman’ He got in touch with us wanting bring the some concerns to the society’s, he is especially disappointed with government. He wrote ‘I took a firm decision to rehabilitate and better myself while behind bars. One of the things I focused on was education and skills. I even went beyond the limits of confinement and wrote a book about gender based violence. But the challenge we as ex-offenders are facing is unemployment even if you have the ability to do the job. The same government which invest in us while behind bars does not want to employ us’
