Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation. This knowledge exchange workshop was part of the four months Res Designer Genes: A Conversation about CRISPR Efrain C., Hope J., Maria R., Sanjay A.L. From Mendel to modern laboratories, genome-editing has fascinated the minds of many. Recently, the CRISPR-Cas9 system has been a major advancement in genome editing. Though this newly discovered mechanism has shown the potential to cure life-threatening genetic problems, the novelty of it has caused some concerns over potential ethical violations. Designer Genes is a conversation hosted by four curious biology undergraduates at Emory University that attempts to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge of CRISPR and the general public’s understanding. The general tenor of the work is specifically designed to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. It is in this spirit of a toy theorem (a deliberately simplistic model with many details removed so that it can be used to explain a mechanism concisely) coupled with slow cinema (minimalist, observational, non-narrative, and deliberately contemplative long takes) that we attempt to reveal an applied, quiet, uncluttered, and practical way of consuming challenging content. We are engineering thought.Welcome to Polytechnicast 🌈 Swear on the Stand Daniel W. Swear Researched and Produced with the assistance of AI. This podcast is demonetized and designed to be a mechanism for people to ingest information without the need to research, read, and digest long, complex writings.
