Vaquero argumenta que el Partido Nacionalista Vasco, un movimiento originalmente más racista que el nacionalsocialismo alemán y más católico que la prelatura vaticana, ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en una referencia del centro político europeo, dejando atrás una historia fascinante que incluye soporte ideológico al terrorismo, colaboración encubierta con la CIA y manejos con el fascismo italiano. El actual PNV prefiere pasar de puntillas sobre, o manipular abiertamente, una historia que está repleta de controversias y bandazos, y que ha desembocado en un partido abiertamente independentista que se ha convertido en clave en el juego político en España.
