Os medicamentos biossimilares, que são reproduções quase idênticas dos medicamentos biológicos de referência, têm potencial para reduzir custos e ampliar o acesso a tratamentos no Brasil. O país já possui cerca de 50 produtos aprovados, superando os Estados Unidos, mas ainda distante da Europa, que tem 86 registros.No contexto brasileiro, os biossimilares já estão presentes em compras públicas e parcerias público-privadas, mas ainda há um longo caminho para garantir que esses medicamentos sejam plenamente utilizados nos sistemas de saúde.Diferentemente dos genéricos, que foram amplamente promovidos pelo governo nos anos 1990, esses medicamentos ainda carecem de um esforço coordenado de comunicação e educação.
