from StoryBee Tales - Bedtime Stories for Kids

Emperor Akbar asks Birbal how many crows are in the kingdom! Birbal gives an exact number. See how he defends his answer with dazzling wit!Birbal's Clever Crow Count[short pause]Chapter 1: A King's Tricky QuestionEmperor Akbar sat on his big, comfy throne. He had a sparkly crown and a long, curly mustache. Birbal, his cleverest friend, stood nearby. [thoughtful] "Birbal," said Akbar, "tell me, how many crows live in our whole kingdom?" Birbal blinked his eyes, but a tiny smile played on his lips. He didn't even look out the window. [energetic] "Your Majesty," he said right away, "there are exactly twenty-one thousand, five hundred and fifty-four crows!" Akbar's eyes grew wide. How could Birbal know so fast without counting?[short pause]Chapter 2: The Emperor's Challenge[surprised] "Twenty-one thousand, five hundred and fifty-four?" Akbar boomed, his mustache wiggling. "That's a very exact number, Birbal! But how can you be so sure? Did you count every single 'caw-caw' crow?" Birbal chuckled quietly. "No, Your Majesty, I did not count them one by one. But this number is very true!" Akbar raised an eyebrow, a playful glint in his eye. He didn't quite believe Birbal's speedy answer. He wanted to see how Birbal would prove it.[short pause]Chapter 3: Birbal's Clever Idea[confident] "Your Majesty," Birbal began, "if you do not believe my count, we can check!" He clapped his hands together with a soft *thwack*. "Send your royal guards out into the kingdom. Tell them to count all the crows they see!" Akbar stroked his beard, thinking. That would be a lot of counting and a lot of guards! But Birbal looked so sure. What if he was right? It was a very big number.[short pause]Chapter 4: A Smart Backup Plan[playful] "And what if the guards count more crows than your number, Birbal?" Akbar asked with a twinkle. "Or what if they count fewer?" Birbal's smile grew wider. [happy] "Ah, Your Majesty, that is the best part!" he said. "If there are more crows, it means some of our feathered friends are visiting from other kingdoms. They came to see our wonderful land!" He paused, letting Akbar think.[short pause]Chapter 5: The Perfect Answer[curious] "And what if there are fewer crows, Birbal?" Akbar pressed, trying to fool his clever friend. Birbal just clapped his hands again, this time with a joyful sound. [explaining] "Then it means, Your Majesty," he explained, "that some of our own crows have flown to visit their families in other kingdoms! They are simply on little vacations!" Akbar burst into a hearty laugh. [laughing] "Ha ha ha!" he bellowed. Birbal's wit was as quick as a jumping frog! He had an answer for everything.[short pause]Chapter 6: A King's DelightEmperor Akbar wiped a tear of laughter from his eye. [happy] "Birbal, you are truly the cleverest!" he exclaimed. "Your answer is perfect, no matter what!" He smiled at his wise friend. Birbal bowed respectfully, his eyes twinkling like little stars. No one would ever need to count the crows, because Birbal's smart thinking had given the best answer of all. The king and his friend shared a happy moment of understanding.Moral of the story: A quick mind and clever thinking can solve any problem, even tricky ones.Theme: cleverness and wit
