Bird Flu and our native birds
from Saturday Morning
Since June, the torea, or South Island pied oyster catcher, has been making its way south to nesting sites across the eastern South Island. The ngutu pare, or wrybill, is also on the move. In about six weeks, we'll see the return of the kuaka, or bar-tailed godwit, arriving from their extraordinary migration from western Siberia and Alaska. But with bird flu now in New Zealand, what could it mean for our native bird populations? The Pukorokoro Shorebird Centre's Keith Woodley explain what the risks are and how closely the situation is being monitored.
