Bambera, head of the U.S. bishop's committee on ecumenical and interreligious affairs, has expressed his robust support for biblical scholar Amy-Jill Levine, as she faces antisemitic backlash for her recent appointment as the first Jewish president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America.Pope Leo XIV has issued a new document that gives the synod of bishops of the Eastern Catholic Church the power to remove a patriarch from office, if their relationship be, as Vatican News reports, "irreparably compromised for serious reasons." Whatever the injustice or injury, do not revert to hatred or violence, since only love, hope, forgiveness and respect will protect and promote human dignity, Pope Leo XIV told the faithful in an Aug. 29 homily. Pope Leo XIV ordered the Holy See's communications office to stop using artwork by Father Marko Rupnik, according to a French Bishop Jean-Marc Micas of Tarbes and Lourdes. Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore dedicated and blessed retreat house in Washington, D.C., adjacent to St. John Paul II National Shrine, with both projects initiatives of the Knights of Columbus.
