Black Army

In this episode, we explore the Black Army of Hungary, the powerful professional mercenary force built by King Matthias Corvinus in the late 15th century. Drawing on Hussite tactics, classical military ideas, and a diverse body of soldiers, the Black Army stood out for its disciplined organization, heavy cavalry, and unusually high use of early firearms. The episode examines how Matthias funded this standing army through taxation reforms and royal support, allowing Hungary to win major victories against the Ottoman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire. We also follow the army’s decline after Matthias’s death in 1490, as unpaid soldiers mutinied and the force was disbanded, leaving lasting consequences for Hungary’s military strength and political future.
