BLACK MAN'S PERSPECTIVE: Black History Month Disappointments

from The Urban Breakdown · host The Urban Breakdown

Commentary from F. Khristopher Blue of www.misterblue.net . :( At the conclusion of Black History Month, I was plagued by feelings of disappointment. However, this disappointment did not have much to do with the focus on Black history lasting only a month or with it being the shortest month of the year. Nor did it have anything to do with the heavy commercialization, the prominently displayed "safe" and "suitable" heroes featured each year or the fact that Black History Month is virtually forgotten when the clock strikes twelve, March 1st. My feelings stemmed from my behavior during February. No matter how others or I view the situation, Black History Month is an excellent opportunity to advance our knowledge and understanding of Black culture, history and traditions. During these 28 or 29 days we have a microscopic-like view placed on the achievements, sacrifices, suffering and glory that we have experienced as a race since African civilizations began. Poems at end by Mister Blue.
