Blanche Taylor Moore: The Woman Who Served Arsenic With a Smile
from Hitched 2 Homicide · host Kris Calvert and Rob Pottorf
For years, Blanche Taylor Moore appeared to be a respectable North Carolina woman with a quiet life, church connections, and a string of relationships marked by illness and death. Then her new husband nearly died from arsenic poisoning. In 1989, just days after Blanche married the Reverend Dwight Moore, he became violently ill. Tests revealed extraordinarily high levels of arsenic in his system. He survived—but investigators began looking backward at the people who had previously been close to Blanche. That scrutiny led them to her former boyfriend and coworker, Raymond Reid, who had died in 1986 after a prolonged, mysterious illness. His body was exhumed, and investigators discovered arsenic in his remains. Blanche was charged with Reid’s murder. Prosecutors argued that she had poisoned him over time, allegedly serving him arsenic-laced food while he became increasingly sick. In 1990, Blanche Taylor Moore was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. But Raymond Reid was not the only suspicious death surrounding her. Authorities also investigated the deaths of Blanche’s first husband, James Taylor, and her mother-in-law, Isla Taylor, while Dwight Moore’s near-fatal poisoning added yet another disturbing chapter. Blanche was convicted only of Raymond Reid’s murder, so allegations involving other deaths should be treated as suspicions rather than proven crimes. More than three decades later, Blanche Taylor Moore remains one of North Carolina’s most notorious female killers—a woman associated with arsenic, poisoned relationships, and the chilling possibility that death seemed to follow the men closest to her. This is the true crime story of Blanche Taylor Moore—the so-called Black Widow of North Carolina, whose secret weapon wasn’t a gun or a knife, but poison served one dose at a time.
