BLAZE STREET MUSIC PRESENTS - MUSIC OF A LIFETIME EPISODE #15 - THE JAZZ FUSION MOVEMENT
from Blaze Street Music Presents 'Music of a Lifetime' · host Various Artists
ALOHA! PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WHAT I'M DOING 👍🏾 I APPRECIATE YOU!WHAT IS THIS EPISODE ABOUT: This episode is about the #40 entry on my list of the 50th greatest albums and records of my lifetime. I had to consolidate this entry into 1 compilation because of all of the great artists that I’m tryin to turn you onto. This episode is about my love of “jazz fusion”. This is indeed a very ambitious episode for me, because of the history, the legacy, of what exactly is jazz fusion. I have to tell you that one of the things I love about my podcast is that it gives me a chance to not only share with all of you my love of this thing we call music, but it also allows me to learn more about it and in doing so, I get a chance to share and educate you also, about the music. Now, I grew up reading LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of liner notes from records; I grew up reading music magazines like Billboard, Keyboard, Musician, Downbeat….uh…but also Ebony and Jet magazine, both of these which used to have LOTS of articles about musical artists, most which were prominent black musical artists of those times. I learned mostly everything I know and love about the artists I grew up with, by listening to them on AM and FM radio, reading their album notes, and articles in magazines or watching them on Soul Train or American Bandstand. Thats why in these podcasts I really want to share SOME information about about these artists and how they created some of the greatest music of my lifetime. So what is jazz fusion? By definition, Fusion means melding or, or combining into one, so this fusion is of styles like jazz, rock, latin, funk and you can say several other styles (progressive jazz? mmmm), but overall, jazz fusion got its start in the late 1960’s when Miles Davis decided to go away from the historical, more traditional leanings of jazz that was based in acoustical music. He began to add electric or electronic elements to his setts, and hire talented, sometimes unknown musicians that he felt could help him achieve his goals and visions for the music. And the first of these recordings was his 1968 LP, ‘Miles in the Sky’. I’m going to be doing a whole episode later about Davis but for now, I wanted to make it known and its often be quoted by many in the music media, is that Miles Davis is most widely known, not as the “creator” of jazz fusion but mostly known as the “father” of jazz fusion because as an artist, he made it his vision to create this music and carry it forward for others to experiment with and create for themselves. There is sooo much information about what is Jazz Fusion, where it came from, the pro’s and con’s of it, one thing is for sure: during the 1970’s, jazz fusion changed American music and allowed new genres in other types of music to be born and become popular as well. One of my fave channels on You Tube is a channel called ‘Off Beat’; I encourage you to go there and check out his episode on Jazz Fusion called ‘Intro to Jazz Fusion’.SOME NOTABLE JAZZ FUSION ARTISTS:The Mahavisnu Orchestra (John Mclaughlin, Billy Cobham)Jan HammerChick CoreaHerbie HancockJeff BeckJaco PastoriusIdris Muhammed Al Di MeolaPat Metheny GroupLenny White (and Twennynine)CalderaLarry CoryellFreddie HubbardEddie HendersonDonald ByrdTony WilliamsSo come with me on this journey of music gave birth to not only some of the most brilliant, eclectic, and fascinating music that America has ever created.
