But 50 years later, many mainstream media sources are – today - hailing this film as a “pioneering masterpiece of social satire”. Masterpiece? Or, just a steady stream of racist/dick jokes/misogyny/farts/etc.? We’ll give you the info to help you decide for yourself. And, how many people know the movie was written by the ground-breaking black comedian, Richard Pryor? (who almost starred in the film as well). Though made for a very, very low budget (and it shows), “Blazing Saddles” became the highest box office grossing film of the year, 1974.
