Assurance: Imbalances and extremes to avoid “[Presumption] may be defined as the condition of a soul which, because of a badly regulated reliance on God's mercy and power, hopes for salvation without doing anything to deserve it [salvation]…” (Catholic Encyclopedia) II. The beloved apostle wrote this letter to God’s people for several reasons. Knowledge of the doctrinal truth in John’s letter is a means which God uses to personally assure us of our salvation in an ongoing, enduring sense. III. Is this verse law or gospel? The biblical doctrine of assurance requires and presupposes a proper law and gospel balance and distinction. The 1689 London Baptist Confession (and most Reformed confessions) dedicates an entire chapter on the doctrine of assurance. IV.
