Sometimes, if given the choice, we would rather chose the blocker over God's blessing. We assume the blocker isn't that bad. We would rather do it our way, and it's not like we are missing out on anything too big. Most people would chose the same; majority wins. But when we start rationalizing our way as truth, choosing it instead of God, we are choosing a life of sin and idolatry.
