BLINDSIDED by the White Savior Complex
from The Talk-ISH Podcast Hosted by Justin Talkish
The movie, Blind Side, is often cited as an example that highlights the white savior complex. The story revolves around a white woman who takes it upon herself to save and uplift a young black man from a "disadvantaged" background. While the intentions of the protagonist may be well meaning, the narrative perpetuates a problematic trope of a white person being the heroic figure who rescues a person of color from their circumstances. In this episode we explore this complex and how it impacts the way that we view normalcy in the family unit and how the very notion of saving is rooted in supremacy and disregard for cultural considerations.
