🚨 BLIZZARD WARNING - Iowa Weather 3/14 - Evening
Good evening. Iowa. I'm Michael Mosby. Folks, we've got a classic spring setup shaping up. It feels mild out there right now, sitting at 49 degrees under cloudy skies. But don't let that fool you, a powerful storm is taking aim at Iowa. As the sun sets. Tonight, showers and thunderstorms are likely after 3 A.M. In Central Iowa. Eastern Iowa sees a chance of storms after 4 A.M. It stays mild, with lows around 41 degrees in Des Moines and 39 in the east. Winds pick up from the southeast, gusting over 20 miles an hour. Sunday brings the drama, the day starts with rain and possible rumbles of thunder. Highs reach the low 50s early, then, a sharp cold front crashes through. Rain changes to snow by afternoon in Central Iowa. Temperatures crash. Dropping to around 30 degrees by evening. Western Iowa sees the switch happen faster, snow starts there by 8 A.M. and continues through 3 P.M, highs near 31 degrees fall into the 20s. Moving on. The real headline is the wind. Northwest gusts will hit 50 to 60 miles an hour statewide Sunday afternoon. This creates blizzard conditions. Especially in Eastern Iowa and the Quad Cities, where 3 to 7 inches of snow is expected. Temperature-wise. Sunday night is brutal, lows drop to 8 degrees in Des Moines. Wind chills plummet to minus 12, it's even colder in the west, feeling like minus 19. Monday stays frigid. Highs only reach 21 degrees, with wind chills near minus 13, with skies clear Monday night, but lows bottom out at 6 degrees. Looking ahead. Let's look at the week ahead, while tuesday warms slightly to 37 degrees. Wednesday looks fantastic, with sunshine and a high near 57, we jump to 72 on Thursday. Friday and Saturday stay sunny and mild, with highs in the low 70s. We'll be back with your next forecast evening. See you tomorrow.
