Blood and Steel: The Tragic Fall of Tonghua Iron
from Matter of Fact: A play on "matter" (physics) and "facts" (news). · host Larry White
The Tonggang incident was triggered by the forced privatization of a massive state-owned enterprise by the private Jianlong Group, which fueled widespread worker resentment through mass layoffs, severe wage cuts, and the implementation of harsh management policies. This tension escalated into two violent murders, beginning with the 2008 killing of plant manager Song Kai and culminating in the 2009 lynching of general manager Chen Guojun by a mob of over 50,000 protesters during a massive riot. Although the workers successfully blocked the initial takeover, the reform process was ultimately defined by political corruption and ended in Tonggang's bankruptcy in 2019, illustrating the tragic human and social costs of China’s industrial transition.
