Body Cam Breakdown: Top Cop Breaking the Rules!?
from Lock'd Up with Copville · host Copville
In this episode of Lock’d Up with Copville, we examine body-camera footage showing a Fort Myers police officer being placed in a difficult position after stopping a city employee for allegedly speeding 12 mph over the limit in a school zone. After the driver contacted Police Chief Jason Fields, the officer was asked to extend a “professional courtesy” and void the approximately $300 ticket. This episode goes beyond the ticket itself. We discuss what happens when police leaders pressure officers to take actions that may conflict with policy, professional judgment, or equal enforcement of the law. Officers placed in these situations may be forced to choose between following their conscience and following the direction of someone who controls their assignments, evaluations, promotions, and careers. That pressure can cause anxiety, stress, loss of confidence, moral injury, and fear of retaliation. It can also place an officer’s credibility and reputation at risk—even when the decision originated with someone higher in the chain of command. We examine how these leadership decisions can affect officer mental health, careers, agency morale, and public trust. If an ordinary citizen would have received the ticket, should a government employee be treated differently simply because she could call the chief? Accountability must apply at every level of law enforcement especially at the top. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
