Body Language: An Important Part of Effective Communication

from Returning to Us · host Lauren Spigelmyer

Communication is 70-90% nonverbal. Body language and tone of voice communicate much more than words alone. Lauren discusses body language during this episode and why it’s so important when talking with kids. You might think your kiddo is not listening, but they are definitely observing your body language! There are both positive and negative types of body language. Often, you can tell someone’s attitude or state of mind just by noticing nonverbal actions. This works for both kids and adults. Positive body language includes things like leaning closer, nodding, smiling, or having a relaxed posture. On the flip side, leaning away, yawning, fidgeting, or crossing your arms all appear negative. If your body language matches your words, they carry more weight. But, when your body language does NOT match your words, people won’t believe you. Here's a challenge: Instead of using words, try using body language when praising a child. Any of these actions will convey that message: a smile, a nod, a pat on the back or even a fist bump! Listen to this episode to learn more or check out our other resources below!  Lauren answers this week’s listener question during the episode: How can we help parents work with their infant or young child that is stressed?Try-at-home tip: Give yourself margin in your schedule.
