Bomb Threat at U.S. Consulate in Halifax | Calgary News

A Halifax man, Ali Assakereh, 54, faces life imprisonment after allegedly making a bomb threat against the U.S. Consulate — now upgraded to a terrorism charge targeting an internationally protected person. Police responded to a suspicious vehicle near the consulate, triggering evacuations and bomb squad deployment before the threat was neutralized. His Iranian-born family is stunned by the accusations, saying they don’t understand his alleged motive. The federal Crown has taken over the case, opposing bail and pushing for surety conditions if released. With multiple adjournments and a Friday bail hearing looming, prosecutors could seek up to five years per count on the original charges — but the real stakes hinge on whether he’ll walk free or face decades behind bars.
