On July 7, 1977, Bonnie Garland, a 20-year-old Yale University student, was brutally murdered in her own bedroom by her ex-boyfriend Richard Herrin. Bonnie was born in New York in 1957 to highly educated parents. Her father Paul was a Yale graduate who went to Harvard Law School, and her mother Joan had a master's degree from Sarah Lawrence. Bonnie met Richard at Yale in 1974 during a campus event called "Bladder Ball." The two began dating, but their relationship became troubled.On the night of July 6th, 1977, Bonnie and Richard had an emotional conversation in her bedroom at her parents' house. Bonnie told Richard she wanted to see other men.After Bonnie fell asleep, Richard sat awake watching the Tonight Show. Then he made a horrifying decision: he would kill Bonnie and then kill himself.Richard crept downstairs, grabbed a claw hammer, wrapped it in a towel, and returned to Bonnie's bedroom. While she slept, he bludgeoned her to death with the hammer. Bonnie's family lay unsuspecting in their own bedrooms as Richard murdered their daughter.This case sparked national debate about domestic violence, obsessive relationships, and the justice system's handling of crimes of passion.
