The link is in the show notes. And now, without further adune, the Dune Part 2 trailer. It's a bonus episode. Welcome.
Can you taste it? I can taste the bonus. It's great. It's great.
I love doing a bonus episode. Me too. It's a little stuff. It gives me a chance to be an editor.
So this won't sound as good as regular episodes because Vegas is not edited again. Yeah. Amateur night. Yeah.
Dune by bonus episode. We haven't done one in a while. We haven't had news this worthy. And this is a big one, Jason, our first look at Dune Part 2.
Yes. Whoo. The trailer dropped. And it was hot.
So I have to say, first of all, just even before we get into it, this music, listen to this. This is the music that's playing during the trailer in the opening scene where we have Paul and Chani. It brings back feelings. Yeah.
Do you recognize it? Yeah. It's from it's from Dune Part 1. Correct.
It's on Zimmer. Yes. It's a sandstorm. And this is like the awesome moment when he's kind of lost in the top.
Yeah. He was an adopter. Whoo. But it worked here so well.
And then, of course, they had the, you know, that I'm, I'd be the. You were feeling it this morning. I was feeling it. I felt it.
Yes. Me too. Holy cow. Well, so we actually did a 9 AM Pacific time livestream in the Discord.
Yes. Like tons of people were in there chatting it up having a good time. I had Juniper Jane crawling over me demanding various things. And so I was not participating at that time.
She was not interested in the trailer. Or interested that you might be interested in the trailer. That didn't figure into her program. Empathy is not huge right now yet.
On Juniper Jane, we will give it time in order to get there. Well, so let's just jump right into it and get to this trailer. So it is two 24. So it's a full trailer.
It's a full trailer. It's not a teaser. Like we, there'll be a second trailer. But this is definitely the first trailer.
It's all, it's basically sets up the whole arc of the movie. Like there's scenes from what will be the beginning, middle, and end of the movie. Yeah, totally, totally. And I thought it was smart to kind of use and tease some of the things that they have in order to really make a strong impression.
But the notion that it starts with Paul and Shawnee's courtship. Just kind of like, to me cute. I think this is like, so there's a couple of things. One is, I think both the poster and the way that the trailer starts, as well as how much of Zendaya's in the trailer, is like a lot of, is a lot of answering the mail on.
We know we told you Zendaya was in part one and she wasn't really in part one. But she is in part two. You are getting Zendaya in part two and she's going to be awesome and you're going to love it. And yes, their me cute is really good.
It's a reminder of just how tremendously charismatic Zendaya is. And I love this notion that even though she's grown up on a desert planet that she cannot conceive of what like diving into water is like. Yeah. And like to me is using his like, I know what swimming is, Riz on her and it somehow is working.
It's great. I love it. It's amazing. I can't remember somebody, one of the Fremen, I think this might be in Dune Messiah, one of the Fremen like went to another planet and was in water for the first time and then ended up being totally changed and radicalized.
There was that happen and then there's like a thing where like someone had, there's like a note in one of the books made in the side where someone drowns and like there wasn't like there wasn't like chikops of word for drowned before that happened. It like never happened. Yeah. Incredible.
Incredible. So we go from that to Iralon, you know, we got our first look and sound from Florence Pugh in the shadows of Arrakis, like many secrets. The darkest of them all may remain. The end of House of Treaties.
She looks phenomenal. She looks phenomenal. I love also shout out to her good friend sobs because Florence Pugh is like basically doing her like voice memo blog from like Seleucis to Condous or whatever. It's just like notes on Arrakis.
You wouldn't believe what happened to me today. It's just great. I love that. She looks awesome.
I think this is like, I think this is one of the big things that the trailer is also delivering is like they're fucking stars in this movie. There's some people in this movie who you will want to see and then we've got Florence Pugh, we've got Austin Butler, we've got Zendaya and a lot of other folks. And like, you know, it's impressing on the fact that there's going to be some stars in this movie. Yeah.
Yeah. Huge. And I also want to give a special shout out to Iralon in her chain mail veil. Yes.
It looked great. Similar to Jessica, but you know, just more sharp, more like deadly. Yeah. But it does give the vibe.
You know, that Benet Gesserit element there kind of comes through. And I love that as a running thread for Iralon, you know, through the story. Yeah. And so yeah, definitely a sense that Iralon is going to be more in the mix that she is in the books, maybe not quite as much as in many series.
But we get Iralon, but no Christopher Walken Emperor in that. That's like a surprise that is being saved somehow. And someone noted in chat, like, he must look crazy. It must be like a real reveal of whatever Christopher Walken looks like as the Patishein version on the fourth, because like they're just like, we can't even, we'll give you Austin Butler looking like, you know, one of the Promethean creatures, but we're not going to give you Christopher Walken as the emperor.
Yes. And no temps like Nelson, either. Derek says it, Chad, the lens rad is going to break. The ice is going to break.
Which is, oh my God. And so now then we transition to Paul and I love this. The title card says Beyond Fear. And then we have Jessica saying your father didn't believe in revenge.
Yeah, look what happened to that sucker. He got rocked and he should have believed in revenge. No doubt. But this, the next card says Fury will rise.
Fury will rise. So I like this theme, right? Like this is part of Paul has, you know, he kind of gets into the Fremen thing, but his core motivation here is revenge. Yeah.
It's interesting. Like, because, you know, as listeners of next week episode, when they're like, I've been thinking about return to the Jedi like I went to see with Griffin, like this is like the anti return to the Jedi. Like in that, like the fundamental dramatic tension is like, how does Luke not give into his anger and hate so that he can like, you know, repair this relationship with his father. And instead of doing his like, how does he use like this relationship with his father to fuel a fury that will burn down the universe?
We'll be cheering. We'll be cheering him all the way. The next part that I love is Paul writing the worm. So we said everything kind of hinges on this.
Well, there's a part that I would call up before that, which was like a really good edit where they show fade. They show fade like fighting. And the audio cuts, the song cuts of like the chanting screaming with his mouth open. So it looks like the, it like, it kind of fools you to think like that sound is coming out of his mouth.
And it just like makes it seem like all this like primal fade fighting. All the more interesting as long time listeners will know I have been pretty skeptical about awesome butler as fade, but also butler as fade in this trailer is obviously dope. Like he looks great. It looks like he's going to be crazy.
It's just like, it looks unhinged. What are you doing? What are you doing? Be deeply unhinged.
Yeah. Very excited about that. So yeah, it seems like it will be, it seems like it will be great. Well, yeah.
And we can keep talking about him right now. First of all, all of fades, arena stuff is black and white. Yeah, that's that's a real interesting little piece of filmmaking in there. I don't know what's I don't know what that means.
Like if we're going to have like in the middle just some like black and white imacs of what is we talked about before, one of our favorite scenes in all of doing the fade arena dual, I am going to lose my mind. If that is just like all black and white imacs with like leah say do with our little opera glasses looking on. Like there's a lot of leah say do in this trailer. Yes.
Yeah. Like a surprising amount of shot of her lady fendering and fade together. Yeah. And then quietly or maybe romantically that is definitely striking.
Yeah. Surprised about that. But yes, I think that's a very, I mean that's obviously like a huge detail as if part of the movie is going to be in black and white on GEDD prime. That's fucking nuts.
Jesus. So I am going on record Jason. Okay. I predict the movie opens with fade and the arena scene and potentially in black and white and then with Paul waking up so that it's a mirror of part one.
Yeah, I think we've long been on. I think we've long been on record with the arena scene being like the opening like that fade is like the you have to introduce the new antagonist right. I love that notion. So that looks really killer and we think it's landfill that he's fighting.
Right. That was a great prediction. So that is very awesome. Let's see the worm.
The worm. Speak on it. So first of all the thumper. I just think it's like it really says something about the power of of Denny and like the like sort of the consideration that he's put he's put into building this world that like the thumper is one of the sexiest thing in this very sexy trailer that thumper is hot.
Like it feels so physical. It feels so thumpy. The sound when he twists it's activated. Like, yeah, it just seems great.
Like it just seems so good. It's the same thing, you know, that has like the little device in 2049 that like, you know, the daughter uses to like generate images like this like, you know, like camera lens adapted thing. It's just like, it's this very specific futuristic detail that pulls you in because you can understand somehow how it would feel to hold that thing. It's like how your tongue knows what something tastes like by what by just by looking at it.
Instinctive somehow know like what that would feel like to twist and like manipulate. I loved it. It's very cool. But the other part is, you know, they start with showing him doing that and then they're cutting back to when Stillgar was giving him some instruction.
Nothing fancy. I understand. This is maybe to me the most important thing. And that is I think Denny took the note that we need to keep humor as a as an element in this story.
The fact of the nothing fancy and then him calling it back. Nothing fancy. I thought it was really funny. Yeah.
And just a nice touching moment. Yeah. I know my question about the nothing fancy is like don't try to impress anyone be simple be direct and this is an extra text text will detail like there's no there's like I mean there is something in there I think about like Stillgar saying like you know just go and do it you just need to do it you don't need to like make it a whole thing. But like the idea that Paul does something like the surprising thing that happens is like the biggest worm of all time shows up.
Yeah. But like the idea that like he mounts it in some kind of particularly acrobatic weird way I don't think is in the book. And so I don't and I'm like in looking what they showed him how he got on the worm. I don't know if that is like is that seems like just how you have to do it right.
You just have to do it on this one. But so like did he do something fancy did he not do the thing that was simple and direct. Because everyone's reaction seems to be like that bro did something nuts like I don't know what the context is for that. I always thought that they just sort of stood and as it was going by they ran up to the side that's certainly how that's what it's sort of talked about.
And like yeah like the description of the book is like you have to have like a certain amount of spacing and there's like a whole formula for based on how big you think the worm is how far back you should go and stuff like that. But like this whole thing where he like jumps into the crevasse of the spreading dune obviously is not a detail from the book but like it just seems like what he would have to do. But yes the by favorite part of the reaction to him doing that and like it does look it looks amazing. But my favorite part of the reaction is Chani's relief and what she sees that she's done it and like Zendaya just has this like the smile beautiful smile like she just and it's so like ecstatic and like it's both like she's relieved but also it's like fulfillment of prophecy and it's just like she can make so much with that look and it is really like one of the big things that's gonna plus up this part two compared to part one is that we get so much more Zendaya and she's just a fucking star like she's just great and we should be glad that we get more of her.
I was so happy just to see her smile like that right because you play so much so many intense characters and so much suffering and just to see her beaming like that I was like oh my god yes she's got her nice little hair yeah a little blue hair band looks really nice yeah yeah totally and then well so just just the way you have the distance shot of Paul and he's holding back and he's holding the hooks like he just looks fucking cool. Yeah he looks cool and like the one of the details in the mounting like how they do the actual writing of the worms always like sort of a fun detail when the dune gets adapted and like in this one like those maker hooks like shoot out like grappling hooks like really you know like gather like to really travel some distance like we never seen that before and that's like a fun that's a fun bit of business. Pretty cool love that so so feeling some relief on seeing the worm that was the only part I was going to be entirely practical worm they found a 300 meter worm in the desert of Jordan it's amazing it looks great I hope he's union. Oh god yes I hope he signed a sequel contract started.
Yeah we need that guy locked up. So and then we have just a lot of cool shots happening very quickly including like an amazing shot of the thopters you know all flying like right at the Valcaries. Yeah that looked dope. Yeah and then and then it took me back to the original dude the original trailer for the Force Awakens when it had the TIE Fighters in front of the Sun.
Oh right yeah that was a good one. And like I think you know like you talk about the Flight of the Valcaries Apocalypse now and Denny's talked about how this is like a war epic. To me like that shot in the trailer like really sets up the idea like this is going to be as we said like his Lawrence of Arabia like this is going to be like a massive war epic in the desert and there's going to be lots of battle and lots of like large scale like you know action which like you know we didn't really get in the first one there's lots of like slow burn leading to this one incredibly long set piece on you know the siege of Erickin but like that's basically it and everything else was like smaller skirmishes and in this one we're just going to get this like grand grand scale battle stuff. Hmm cannot wait cannot wait.
Derek points out in chat that the TIE Fighters in the Sun shot from the Force Awakens trailer is a good friend type of series. Holy cow. Nice go for it Todd. That worked.
The other part that really stuck out to me is you have long lived the fighters so same as the trailer or the poster we have long lived the fighters which is killer and then just these two shots it's separate where Paul is walking up you're behind him and you see the masses and he raises his hand is the kind of the last thing in the trailer. Yep. I got excited I got chills at that point. They look incredible.
Yeah. Holy shit. Man Crowdtech is getting very very good. Yeah it looks great.
It looks great. The other two details insert type things that I noticed were one you get like a shot of like there's a shot of like someone's like four fingers going into red four finger holes. Yeah. Well the next shot is that they're opening like there's a what I think is the water of life probably and so maybe that's like sort of the storage system for the water of life you know the Brita filter for the water of life but whatever it was it was very cool it was like just cool that they put like these are like the little things that like they get right in these movies.
Every time. Yeah. That's just like so well considered in the production design and then the other the other thing is that we talked about a bit of discord. What about holding the water of life?
Yeah it looks great. It looks beautiful. It looks great. The vase is incredible and the costume is like insane.
It's just great. Like you're just like oh yes this is like some even if you don't know what the water of life is you're like this is like some holy ceremony like something sacred is happening here. We don't actually get any shots that I can remember of like the spice orgy that happens after the water of life and I don't think we get do we get any we don't get any like Alia stuff either right we don't get Alia but we do get Jessica both with and without the face tattoos right so I'm still trying to figure out what that's all about. So that's just like she's like the Reverend mother of the tribe.
Oh why she would have not have some of them at some point. I'm assuming that she is not going to permanently have face tattoos all over her face. Right. That's only for certain kind of ritual.
Yes. You know on bar mitzvah days or whatever. Maybe that's just it it's just like a head up it's a head up. Yeah.
Yeah. That makes sense. The other bit and you were talking about this I think it discord with others is there's the shot of the woman who was in climax. So weila yakub.
So weila yakub who's like captured by Sardar and has like some dead bird. Birds around her. Yeah. We don't know what this is.
We don't know what this is but it's a very compelling shot. Yeah. And she's actually in the trailer a second time there's a close up of her shouting which I thought was really cool. Walpole was writing.
So cannot wait to see. Yeah. She shouts. Yeah.
It looks great. Donnie continuing to up the participation of women is a great thing. Yeah. And making this thing bigger and more epic is all good.
Has 70 millimeter apologized yet? Have they reacted their episode? No. No.
I reached out I reached out to two members of 70 millimeter to try and get them out of this reaction. I refuse. Proto was busy and Danny was Danny was out. So unfortunately they could not join us.
All right. Well, we'll let them come to it in their own time. Yes. This trailer looks hot.
The trailer is hot and we are hype. Yes. We're very hype. The hype train begins and earnest now.
Get ready. And we'll run it's six months to the day, right? Yeah. Yeah.
Let's go. Let's fucking go. All right, Jason final thoughts. I think it's a good trailer.
Denny still at the top of his game. Most important science fiction filmmaker of our generation. We're honored to live in his time and we only have to wait six months to get this movie which will be amazing. And we didn't have to put up with a slow mo pop song.
We just got Hans. Just like straight out there. Just like give it turn it over to Hans. Yeah, we got this thing.
They may do one as a second one or something. I could see them doing something. It will be a second one. We shall see.
Thank you for listening everybody. We'll see you next week on Monday for the harder they come. Peace. Let's go.
