BONUS EPISODE: Declaration of Independence LIVE READING in Seattle - August 2003

On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present audio from a live reading of the Declaration of Independence held at the old MOHAI - Museum of History & Industry - in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood. When an original printing of the Declaration of Independence visited Seattle in August 2003, it was displayed for 11 days at MOHAI. The document was here as part of a national tour organized by Norman Lear, the TV producer who had purchased what's known as a “Dunlap broadside.” MOHAI presented a live reading of the Declaration of Independence with a cast of local current and former elected officials – with then-Evening Magazine host (and future Sammamish City Councilmember) John Curley as emcee. Among the voices reading the Declaration are late former Governor John Spellman, late former Seattle Mayor Gordon Clinton, late former Seattle Mayor Paul Schell, Seattle's then-Mayor Greg Nickels, Washington's then-Secretary of State Sam Reed, future Attorney General Rob McKenna, future King County Executive Dow Constantine, and other well-known figures. The reading of the Declaration of Independence was produced by CASCADE OF HISTORY producer/host Feliks Banel when he was deputy director of MOHAI, and was recorded before a live audience on August 26, 2003 in the McEachern Auditorium at the old MOHAI in Montlake.
