Bonus Episode: What are Hydroceles, Spermatoceles, and the Epididymis, Anyway?

from The Armor Men's Health Show · host Dr. Sandeep Mistry and Donna Lee

In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener's question about his recent procedure to have hydroceles above his testes removed. Dr. Mistry explains that a hydrocele is a non-cancerous fluid sac that develops around the testicle and which has to be surgically removed, not drained, to prevent recurrence. Spermatoceles are small, non-cancerous, fluid-filled structures behind the testicles that come off of the epididymis. Some patients have so many cysts on their testicles that a epididymectomy is required. If there is still swelling or any kind of mass remaining after 6-12 weeks of recovery after a hydrocelectomy or spermatocelectomy, it will likely require further intervention or even a surgical revision. Furthermore, pain or swelling after a vasectomy or a hernia repair should be evaluated ASAP. No matter the cause of swelling in and around the testicles, you should have a thorough evaluation by a trusted urologist.
