BONUS: Let’s Get Technical About Coffee, Coffee Roasting and How to Make Your Coffee Taste Better with Derek Stetler

from Coffee Talk: From the Ground Up · host Engineering Consulting Services

In this bonus episode of Coffee Talk, we’re getting to know Derek Stetler of the IT department. He begins the episode sharing about his career path and switching majors in college, explaining what network management is and how IT troubleshoots concerns as they arise. Derek goes onto share about his hobby of coffee roasting, the flavors of coffee and how to make the best cup of coffee. Coffee roasting materials mentioned: Fresh Roast SR540 – roasts 4oz at a time Fresh Roast SR800 – roasts about 6-8 oz at a time Behmor 2000AB Plus – can roast up to 1lb at a time Cuisinart Grinder Capresso Grinder Some of Derek’s key takeaways on coffee roasting are: The length of time and temperature in which you roast the coffee beans is what creates the different flavors. For example, lighter roast has a more flowery taste, dark roasts have a chocolatey smell and taste. Buy a coffee roaster, some beans and experiment with roasting your own coffee. It’s a small investment but can ultimately save you money if you have a habit of buying coffee often. When you roast your own coffee, you can smell and taste the difference. You can enjoy the flavor of the coffee without the cream, sugar and additives. The pot depends on what you are doing.  For just black coffee, most standard coffee makers will do – it isn’t the maker that makes the coffee, it’s the roast of the coffee. For single serve coffee, you can use a Keurig with a reusable filter to put the ground/roasted coffee in.
