It earned the name before the road was finished, when crossing the range on foot or muleback could take days and not everyone arrived ([Q Costa Rica](https://qcostarica.com/the-famous-cerro-de-la-muerte-why-is-it-called-that/)). Paso Canoas remains the largest crossing between Costa Rica and Panama, at the southern end of Route 2 ([Two Weeks in Costa Rica](https://www.twoweeksincostarica.com/paso-canoas-border-crossing/)). Julio is telling the truth about the islands.
