The battle that has previously been fought was in the fifth year of the reign of the judges, and in the 6th the people were mournful of the losses of their brethren and their flocks and herds and crops which had been trodden down. They were humbled and began to try harder to live righteously and many of the non-believers were converted and joined the church in the 7th year of the reign of the judges. In the 8th year the people began to prosper and by the 9th year they started to become prideful and look down at others and to not help those in need and the church began to set a bad example to the non believers so Alma gave up being chief judge and handed over the position to a man named Nephihah and turned himself to missionary word and going about among the people to preach to them. Alma kept the title of High Priest.
