Bookcast HK ep.12 - Fortune's Bazaar | Guest: Vaudine England

from Bookcast HK

Fortune’s Bazaar: The Making of Hong Kong。 主持|黎穎詩博士 書名|Fortune’s Bazaar: The Making of Hong Kong作者|Vaudine England出版|US: Scribner (2023); UK: Corsair (2023)ISBN|978-1-4721-5714-0/978-1-9821-8451-3⚯In October’s Bookcast, we are honoured to invite Vaudine England to discuss her newly published book Fortune’s Bazaar: The Making of Hong Kong. Vaudine is a journalist with three decades of experience in South East Asia and Hong Kong. Currently residing in Amsterdam, she is pursuing a PhD in Asian history at Leiden University and is a research associate with the Hong Kong History Project at the University of Bristol.Fortune’s Bazaar gives a detailed examination of the foundation of Hong Kong, or who and what made Hong Kong a metropolitan. The book focuses on the most influential figures during Hong Kong’s first century. Many of whom were neither British or Chinese – they were Malay or Indian, Jewish, Armenian, Parsi, Portuguese, Eurasian or Chindian – or simply, Hongkongers. While some may have been long forgotten, they played pivotal roles in the formation of institutions that survives times and continues to exist today. The people represent Hong Kong’s roots of a multiethnic community, which was linked to ancient trading routes across the Indian and other oceans. This episode will be in English.
