Boundaries For Beginners

from Pieces To Wellness · host TPP

This week, we're talking about boundaries. With a topic as complicated and as difficult as boundaries, it's best to start at the beginning, taking a beginner's mind approach. Karen admits to being a beginner at boundaries for a number of reasons. First, there is an important difference between setting boundaries and maintaining boundaries. We shouldn't be setting boundaries when we're in a heightened emotional state (and, when we're dysregulated, it's even more important to maintain the boundaries we do have). It's best to converse about boundaries when you're feeling stable emotionally so that conversations are less likely to turn into confrontations. Boundaries can change over time. Just because we've used certain boundaries to protect ourselves from harm in the past, we may be safer now and no longer need to hold the same boundaries as before. And sometimes the most important boundaries we set are with ourselves. This is where knowing and practicing our non-negotiables can help us put the right boundaries in place to promote better mental health.Case in point, for a recovering people-pleaser, particularly one who feels/has felt that their worth is determined by the amount that they please and help others (ahem, Karen) boundaries can be very difficult. Open, vulnerable communication is key to preventing yourself from the emotionally draining experience of trying to make everybody else happy all the time. This episode only scratches the surface when it comes to boundaries, but you gotta start somewhere!Let us know what you think!
