Bourgeois Gentleman-Molière

from Stupor Mundi · host Lionel Allshorn

"Bourgeois Gentleman" by Molière is a timeless comedic exploration of social aspirations and the absurdities of class distinction. The story centers on a wealthy man who desires to elevate himself to the status of a gentleman, despite his lack of understanding of the culture and manners that accompany such a title. This enduring work highlights the folly of pretension and the often comical clash between social classes, making it as relevant today as it was in Molière's time. The themes of identity, ambition, and the pursuit of acceptance resonate with contemporary audiences, inviting reflection on the nature of self-worth and societal expectations.

Stupor Mundi: The Life and Times of Frederick II Emperor of the Romans King of Sicily and Jerusalem 1194-1250 by Lionel Allshorn Loyal Books Frederick II , under whose reign the Holy Roman Empire reached its greatest territorial extent, was called by his contemporaries "Stupor Mundi," the "astonishment of the world." Frequently at war with the papacy, which was hemmed in between Frederick's northern and southern Italian lands, he was excommunicated four times. Frederick spoke six languages and was an avid patron of the arts. He negotiated a peace treaty ending the sixth crusade, reigned over a cosmopolitan court at Palermo, and entrusted the administration of his southern kingdom to an efficient Muslim and Jewish bureaucracy. Allshorn writes that "around his name there gathered a glamour of strangeness and splendour, of genius soaring to perilous questionings of eternal truths, of unbreakable resolution and of unconquerable pride." - Summary by Pamela Nagami APA Religions 101 Axis Mundi Media + APARRI An introduction to Asian and Pacific American religions through interviews with experts and practitioners, host Dr. Bradley Onishi speaks with APA scholars about:* Asian American Catholicism* Asian American Buddhism before and beyond Whiteness* Fighting racism with the wisdom of Sikh teachings* Doing Muslim theology as a Vietnamese American* Asian American evangelicals in the MAGA Age* The challenges of creating Filipino religious communities* Race, Jim Crow, and the origins of modern yoga* Caste privilege in the United States and India* Asian Americans and Affirmative Action* Racialized Capitalism* Being Jewish, Japanese, queer and clergyThis series is a joint venture between APARRI and Axis Mundi Media.
