BPD and Anxiety: Panic, Catastrophizing, and Fear of Losing Control (Anxiousness - The BPD Bunch S7)

from The BPD Bunch · host The BPD Bunch

Have you ever been more afraid of your own reaction than of the thing you were reacting to?In this episode of The BPD Bunch, Xannie, Carys, Katja, Céline, and Dan talk about how anxiousness shows up in borderline personality disorder. They share what it was like to replay breakups until they became unbearable, feel physically sick around someone they had just started dating, run from conflict without shoes or a phone, and avoid important conversations because they were terrified of losing control. The group also explores the fear underneath many worst-case scenarios: “I won’t be able to cope.” They discuss catastrophizing, panic attacks, shame about anxiety, fear of judgment, masking emotional reactions, and how relationship anxiety can create more chaos while trying to prevent abandonment.Topics include:* BPD and anxiety* Fear of losing control* Catastrophizing and worst-case thinking* Panic attacks and physical anxiety symptoms* BPD anxiety after a breakup* Fear of abandonment and rejection* Avoiding conflict because of emotional reactions* Learning to trust that you can copeIf you’ve ever avoided a conversation, relationship, opportunity, or decision because you were afraid of how intensely you might react, this episode is for you. This season, we’re discussing BPD through the lens of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). To meet criteria for BPD in this model, a person must have difficulties in at least two areas of personality functioning (Criterion A): identity, self direction, empathy, or intimacy, along with four or more pathological personality traits (Criterion B): emotional lability, anxiousness, separation insecurity, and depressivity (which are sub-traits of negative affectivity), impulsivity and risk taking (sub-traits of disinhibition), and hostility (a sub-trait of antagonism). In the first two episodes of the season, Dr. Carla Sharp, Dr. Frank Yeomans, and Dr. Alex Stein explain what the AMPD is, how it changes from the current categorical model, and how the BPD diagnosis is changing.
