'Breaking Away' - (Rev. Barbara Prose)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 19, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION In the Gospel of Luke, chapter 14, verses 25-27, it is written, “Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to then, ‘If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple’.” But, there are times in our lives when we need to break away. There are stories that have been imposed upon us by our families, schools, and faith traditions that do not reflect the truth of the Spirit within us now. A Spirit which calls us toward a deeper freedom and the possibility of a greater love. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t broken away from my family in fundamental ways. Let’s explore what this passage has to tell us about the times we need to break away.
