Breaking Silence: Confronting Trauma and Healing Community with Nasr "Versátil" Ismail

from From the Ashes · host Valerie Hwang Beck

We are lucky this week to be joined by my good friend Nasr "Versátil" Ismail, or “Ish” as I know him. A master martial artist with over 40 years of experience and creator of The Warrior Class, Nasr shares his journey through Capoeira, movement therapy, and counseling psychology. Throughout the episode, Nasr shares his personal experience of the impact of childhood sexual assault, how he has harnessed the healing power of movement, and the importance of addressing difficult conversations within communities. Nasr is an excellent example of a community leader who is unafraid to facilitate the uncomfortable discussions required to heal not only individual people but also the systems in which they live.  Key Moments [00:02:53] – Nasr discusses his early life and how martial arts, particularly Capoeira, shaped his identity. [00:15:13] – The impact of childhood trauma and Nasr's journey through therapy, including his experience with Male Survivor. [00:23:00] – Introduction to Capoeira as a healing modality and its integration into The Warrior Class. [00:35:46] – Nasr's academic journey at Pacifica Graduate Institute and how it informed his therapeutic practices. [00:43:48] – The importance of addressing conflict within communities and fostering open communication. [00:49:54] – Discussion on the Safe Schools initiative and its role in creating healthier spaces within Capoeira communities.
