Breaking the Binary: A Trans Woman's Experience Navigating the World

from The Yearbook Experience · host Avi Manullang, Monica Loera

Every year, yearbook advisers and their students find it harder to cover topics in their schools that are more inclusive to their student population and current social issues. Some out of fear of backlash, others because they don’t know where to start. One of the most recent topics of controversy in schools has been the discussion of trans students, the use of pronouns, and how to better understand and effectively cover them in their yearbooks. In this episode, I had the privilege of learning from a former yearbook editor Avi Manullang, and her personal experience as a Trans woman. My goal when addressing this topic is to educate the masses, better understand trans issues, and teach students how to objectively tell a story in the yearbook.
