Ever feel like certain rules or systems just don’t fit you? In this episode, I explore how the more different you are from those who created the rules, the more critical it is to question and adapt them. From science (where studies often default to men as the standard) to societal norms, we dive into why it’s essential to think critically about the frameworks we live in—and how to pave your own path when they don’t work for you. Here are some practical, everyday examples of why mindless rule-following doesn’t work for everyone and why questioning the system can be necessary: 1. Health & Medicine: One-Size-Fits-All Doesn't Work • Example: Many medical studies are based on male bodies as the default, which has led to misdiagnosis or poor treatment for women (e.g., heart attack symptoms in women often present differently but aren’t widely recognized). • Takeaway: If the standard doesn’t fit your body, questioning medical advice and seeking second opinions can be life-saving. 2. Workplace Norms: The 9-to-5 Isn’t for Everyone • Example: A creative person finds that working strict office hours kills their productivity, yet their company won’t allow flexible schedules. They’re expected to follow the “rules” even when it hinders performance. • Takeaway: Challenging rigid work structures or negotiating a different setup can lead to better results and well-being. 3. Education: Different Learning Styles Get Ignored • Example: Schools often prioritize sitting still, memorization, and standardized testing—systems designed for neurotypical students. A child with ADHD struggles under these expectations but thrives in hands-on learning environments. • Takeaway: Parents and students who advocate for different learning approaches (e.g., project-based or experiential learning) can unlock potential outside the rigid system. 4. Beauty Standards: Fashion and Design Ignore Body Diversity • Example: Most clothing sizes are based on a limited range of body shapes, leaving many people struggling to find clothes that fit well. Standardized beauty norms further reinforce unrealistic expectations. • Takeaway: Challenging fashion norms and supporting brands that offer inclusive sizing and diverse representation helps shift the industry. 5. Diet & Nutrition: Generic Guidelines Don’t Fit Everyone • Example: A standard diet plan suggests a high-carb intake, but someone with insulin resistance or PCOS finds that this worsens their health. Yet, mainstream advice continues to push it as the default. • Takeaway: Personalized approaches to nutrition are often more effective than blindly following broad recommendations. 6. Career Paths: The "Traditional" Route Isn’t the Only Option • Example: Society pushes college as the only path to success, but some people thrive through apprenticeships, trade skills, or entrepreneurship. Yet, they face stigma for not following the conventional route. • Takeaway: Challenging outdated career narratives can open more fulfilling and financially stable opportunities. Green Millennium, The by Fritz Leiber (1910 - 1992) LibriVox From the classic science-fiction and fantasy author Fritz Leiber comes this intriguing tale of a green cat. From the author's introduction: "The world Phil Gish lived in was not a pretty one, and Phil didn't enjoy living in it. He was disillusioned, purposeless, hopeless, and haunted by the fear that a robot would take over his job. But then Phil was a timid person, not much given to adventure seeking. If he hadn't been so mild he might have found his kicks at All Amusements, the syndicated playground where anyone could find fun, providing he had the proper sadistic and otherwise aberrated elements in his personality. But Phil was good—and bored. And then one day a cat perched on his window—not an ordinary cat—a green cat. For the first time in years Phil was happy. He promptly named the cat Lucky because he somehow knew that as long as the cat stayed with him he'd feel fine. But Lucky didn't stay long. In a matter of minutes he had disappeared into All Amusements park. It
