Welcome to Comedians Talking Sports episode number five. I'm your host Joe Kilgownan. I'm still feeling a little under the weather So whether voice sounds like absolute shit, but still I had a power through I had to do it for you guys Thanks for listening get some positive feedback from some good people. Yeah, you know, it's it's building slowly But so please tell your friends about it still not an iTunes that is not me that is not me because I do not know how graphic design works You know you have to have the art or like the logo whatever Certain like size or pixels or some shit and it's very annoying and I can't fix myself And then I had one picture I was like that's the picture when he's that and now I'm like yeah not so much So I still have some cloud where they're just it's easy You can download the app it's a free app if you want to know your phone or if you're just at home You know soundcloud.com backslash comedian's talking sports on today's episode I talked to you can be in front of me Cowan who is my oldest friend in Stan of comedy one of my oldest friends I know him since I started we met when I was like a weekend doing stand up at an open mic in Chicago Always enjoyed talking sports with Brendan He knows a lot about pretty much all sports I can tell you talk about any sport and he's got a very cool history with sports growing up talk a little bit about how we played I played rugby.
I was gonna say play fencing. You don't play fencing you fence fencing or something I could be wrong. I digress nonetheless, but yeah I was a fun interview talked about some of that stuff And then we talked a lot of baseball at the end made some predictions about what me Jley baseball is gonna do moving forward whether the D. H is gonna come into play nationally and whatnot You guys can hear for yourself any feedback at all you can hit me up Joe at Joe killgaleon.com.
It's a simple Way to do it. Let me know follow me on Twitter at Joe killgaleon Instagram I don't really know how you complain via Instagram You know speaking Instagram Shaquil and Neil's got a pippin come on guys I click all famers You know each other back and forth about some stupid hypothetical. I love how they do them basketball Let's take the five greatest Lakers were the five greatest polls and then let's argue for about a week and a half over who would win It would never happen although it'd be great if Jerry West and Bob loved all the other go fuck themselves via my space You know they'd be great Bob loves dad. I apologize that was in for taste everyone doesn't for taste all right Well, we all know the Bulls win that they've Michael Jordan hands down They would win unless they were gonna have like Shaquil, Neil Kareem and will all on the floor at the same time Which you can't do you can't have three centers.
I'm making that rule you can't three centers on the court at once Although they'd be very slow. So I feel like Jordan and pippin would get around them. That's a tough one It's a tough hypothetical No one will know so we'll ever win and nor should we give a shit all I know is right now the Bulls would be the Lakers I'm a fan of that. All right.
So here's here's the end of the bread McGowan. Thanks for listening to comedian Stocking Sports All right here. I am show killgown sitting with old front probably my oldest friend in comedy I'd say at least you and Dean Carlson. This is comedian Brendan McGowan.
Joe. Thanks for having me Dude, thanks for being here. It's great to be here Now I'm gonna warn the listeners up front that it's gonna be pretty Chicago heavy the first the first half of this podcast I bet Yes, cuz we're gonna do a little do a little history digging up with you and your history buffed So this would be nice talk a lot about Chicago sports Brendan and I both grew up in the city of Chicago and one of the rare comedians that I knew was in Chicago That was a lifelong Chicago one. Yeah, so many of the people I met were transplants I think was you mean junior stalker and That's only what she goes and maybe one or two other people but you have the most part It was all transplants.
Yeah, which was cool You know, but it was strange for me cuz I hadn't I never met anyone who wasn't like like one Chicago I started at 21 going on 22. It was like oh you move here for this was strange to me Yeah, I guess well, you and I went to very different schools growing up and I went to a school where people are like driving in from There's a good school and I went to a good school and I went to a fucking eight-day school. I'd no no No, I'm not gonna say that my high school was great, but it's one of those things where I loved it I want to trade it for another high school on the same path in Chicago. You're just a nacious Yeah, and I actually met someone from saying nations recently.
I knew you. Oh, no She plays on my baseball league. I can't be a fast-pitched baseball league every Sunday. That's go ahead and it's fast-pitched pretty cool So I forget a name I feel bad about that.
I'll pop up later. Here's I was a bad person in high school. So she kind of did this Oh, I know Brendan. Yeah, yeah, she kind of did that like Brendan legendary.
Oh, you're like there's Bueller Oh shit, I don't love you. You made a lot of noise. Well, I did make a lot of noise I don't know what everyone love me, but that's fine, too But so, you know, I had a people that were for lack of their transplants for high school. I was so familiar with it quickly Yeah, yeah, I'm not against transplants.
My mom was raised in Cedar Rapids I before she came to Chicago, you know, I've come from an immigrant family among the grandparents, you know, like their generation I think but I think what we're talking about is more you hadn't been around people that weren't from yeah I had a good and so it was weird to meet people who were just like little like sports I was like what everyone like sports because I came from a neighborhood where you had to like sports Yeah, and I think people a lot of those people that we that we met doing stand up initially in Chicago We're probably from the same kind of neighborhood and just did not enjoy that mandate different experience Yeah, I'm messing around with a new joke right now. I'm gonna tell it but basically I don't think people actually hate sports themselves I think they associated with hating on action sports fans or they hate it or they associated with time in their life where they're being secure They weren't good at something. I don't think some literally hate sports per se I don't think anyone's ever walked past a pick up game of basketball thought fuck that shit They you know, I don't think they hate the act of like little kids playing a sport But they might actually hate what it's associated with the culture of sports. They hate yeah for a lot of people It's watching someone watch sports.
That's difficult because a lot of people aren't good at watching sports No, and the amount of money that goes into sports the amount of time you know You ever like you don't drink anymore. You don't mind me mentioning that at all Yes, but when you did maybe because Maybe because I'm trying to phrase this correctly here hold on a sec When you were drinking you were probably in that moats you probably didn't notice it But I recently few months ago was the 20th football season I wasn't feeling like I'm not gonna drink and I noticed because I was completely sober in a bar And you probably see it a lot more now when you're sober and you're around drunk sports fans Yeah, the older the sports fan the dumber the shit that comes out of their mouth It's unreal isn't it? Yeah, like I used to I used to kind of be on that train of thought to what they got a dance So much and I scored touchdown and then I got older and I'm like well, they're gonna pay billions to play a kids game Yeah, it's very hard what they do who cares that they're dancing. They should dance.
That's awesome What they just did at best they get 12 chances a year to do that dance You know, I mean like it would be amazing if they dance that dance 12 times in a calendar year for scoring a touchdown Yeah, 12 touchdowns at the hell of a season so if you're only allowed to dance 12 times you fucking go for it You know, I mean and it's really hard to do you just dodged 11 people trying to kill you Yes, and you're in the end zone you're getting all this money 65,000 people are screaming for you I would do some I would do a back flip or some breakdance it too. It makes it makes perfect sense I think a lot of that comes from You could say is a racism. Yeah, I don't want to say like a little bit though Because hockey players celebrate all the time and don't say shit maybe but also hockey players don't make as much as NFL players I think it's a lot of it is why are you having fun at work? I hate my fucking job.
There you go. Yeah, right? That's not a race also why you're having fun at work your job should be harder than this you make 12 million blah blah blah dollars Yeah, it is a jelly thing, but when we that there's no job that's harder like well, there is but I mean, yeah It's pretty fucking difficult man and to be a professional athlete something everyone wants to do yeah So when they see people they feel I don't know there's this whole thing where it's like have some class act like you've been there And all that kind of stuff and sometimes I think that does look cool I'd like I kind of like marshall I think so or and then just act like yeah There you go, but I don't blame the people who when they do score they go crazy because what they did was so athen hard I think it is equally cool if someone acts like what they did was whatever when it was we also it was amazing Yeah, and if someone's really into it like one one reason that I really like sports and I've like turned into a bigger and bigger sports fan as time is going by is because so many people are in generation are passionate about nothing true and like People that are playing like you got a you got to really be on board with playing sports if you want to be a pro and No, man, it's like there's no irony to it You just love watching someone be the best of the thing exactly I agree with that and coming from the world of state of comedy We know how hard you have to work to get ahead in that game the difference is and what I've always been jealous of with welcome Tells us a lot of athletes for many reasons like, you know who would want to hit a home run But in baseball or fastball or any sport say we'll use baseball because it's always the easiest one to use for an algae You go four for four Everyone's talking about you were amazing, but in comedy how many shows have we seen with the best time? We couldn't get talked about yeah, I've watched that like Audition sets and time again and all this stuff where I just wish comedy was more of a meritocracy I wish it was more of like oh, yeah, this person, but then we forget its entertainment's casting Yeah, you know, they got a give it all and that's great though because you want different points of view So I'm cool with that with comedy but part of me wishes because I come from such a strong sports background Yeah, we had stats or it's like hey, McAllen's band eight hundred this month And you know don't you think I'm paying thousands?
You did those two stupid shows in the outskirts of town that you don't really want to do but a friend was on you got a free ride and so he went You know down to you know down to do a show at vfw all or whatever like that would be cool if there was something like that Yeah, there isn't and that's fine, too, and you're right it is nice with the passion because I Like watching I like watching the guy celebrate now. I used to nap and I'm like that's awesome What you just did was great and you that's all you practice. That's your whole life And you did that yeah, you sort the game when you go you should drop down 1d and do a triple fist pump You hit a game when you shot why not go crazy? Yeah, all that kind of stuff and also because I go to parties now and people wanted For the most part want to talk about like TV and movies because that's our new common ground sure, you know, I mean like it's Which great I'm into both of those things but those are fake people doing a fake thing and sports isn't you know So I can't any cows So I said the best reality television sports I've I see equal drama in each and for different reasons and if you don't like it That's fine.
That's super cool I'll talk about what you want to talk about cuz I can hang out and talk about a comic book movie I can do that too I'm glad you brought up comic book because Rudy asked got a mutual friend of ours in the comedian I got him in the hockey your roommates in Chicago and he was in it was the year after the Hawks won the stand the couple were Living together. Yeah, he never really watched hockey his whole life. So he started watching it with me He was like this sport is awesome. I can't really wish I was exposed to this one was younger It's from Alaska from Alaska.
He just wasn't into it. You know and I know there's no professional team up there and all that stuff He said he remember playing like floor hockey or like time hockey, but he was not you know anything I think he said that really if you're listening, I might be wrong and I apologize But anyway, he wasn't into it started getting really into it It was the year that Vancouver was up three to nothing and we almost came back in one I'm born came back up injured He was always the sedine brothers killer and got in the long goes head and we almost make this great to really come back And I remember at the last game seven and overtime to Chris Campoli didn't want to clear the fucking puck I'm still angry about that. I just hate Vancouver. I'm sure the people say about their team sucks And he said to me goes you know what Joe?
You know why I like comic books because Batman always wins He goes in a comic book the Blackhawks would have came out on top like we could you right you make it so that they win And I think it's kind of better. Sometimes it's good to have your heart broken from time to time Sometimes it's good to just get knocked out a little bit We're like ah that crushes you and then you realize but wait It's just a sport and all that kind of stuff and you try to move on with your life And you do of course, but you know although the O3 Cubs I still that's still that's festers Yeah, I realized how much more I'm a baseball fan after O3 than I was a football fan because the Bears lost a Super Bowl and to the Colts I was devastated but after about two weeks I was over it when the Cubs lost in O3 that whole offseason and I would have dreams Twice a week where we did win and I'd wake up furious because we didn't win because the oxen's announcement turned a little play because That's the bakery to know how to calm down his picture all this shit, you know a lot You said in mark got three in game one you said a lot of things. I'm sorry Let me jump in real quick I'll take that or I was lost against Vancouver over any Batman win because every Batman win is a period victory because he's been around for 60 years And Gotham is still a fucking shit hole good call so fine And the Bears lost in that Super Bowl is not as difficult to swallow just because the NFL is a sport where you No matter how inept the management of the team is you could still wind up in playoffs Just because of that sport makes forces you to turn your roster It's a hard salary cap. Yeah, which is their goal.
I mean the ideal NFL going back to the Last commissioner I want to say I'm even long before the goal was every team should be 8-8 That's what they want They want every team to have a chance to make the playoffs every year Well, that's another reason why football is as much as the NFL's got a lot of problems right now As far as a hard salary cap in the way they share TV revenue and everything like that It is a well-structure league with a small market like green Bay. Yeah, no, it's really a national I was much I hated there like a national treasure comes to football has as much of a chance as New York or LA Well, I like this team I'm sorry New York or Chicago or any of the big markets small markets have just so much of a chance We're like in baseball although lately smart GMs have figured out you could lack a player's longer like what Pittsburgh's done And then you have Oakland with just reinventing themselves constantly That's the only way for small markets to compete Oh, sure Pittsburgh and Oakland where is Yankees and Boston which is buying teams every year in football every team because the salary cap is the same Across the board they have a shot and that's awesome. It's a level playing field Yeah, I well in a sense. I don't know football's becoming difficult for me Just because they're they're making the game on launch ball.
They're making it's not yeah How can people talk about this and not to cut you off the average football game is what three hours 10 minutes It used to be the game is on noon and there's another game of three So the noon game is over then three o'clock game now They're going to be over by like 250 250 yeah, because it's about to be at 240 that's a pretty important for the three o'clock exactly now It's the noon game and at 315 and almost three twenty five on some occasions unnoticed. Yeah, I mean I'm delayed You're right there's going into the 315 game There is no panel show for the NFL that's tolerable for me also So when you got a shoehorn in an extra 15 minutes of you know that Fox garbage with how we long Recapping the games which we don't need anymore because we have red zone like there's no That's not as great as the red zone channel. It's fantastic and it's it's but um, you know They are killing themselves with the whistles and all passing it really is a slow moving game And I feel like it's taking the general public a while to realize this because football's once a week Yeah, you know people talk about baseball being so slow and yeah baseball's doing some stuff to change it up And I don't want to say that's it Yeah, cuz I want to with our future predictions at the end I want to see what you what else you think baseball could do because I know this is me a baseball Yeah, once we get your past a little bit here, but uh football again That's three hours 15 minutes. I checked recently the air is baseball time for a game this year has been three hours flat Or three hours in five minutes I went to have been the one company every week this year and it was Kyle Henderson for the Cubs and he works fast It was a two-hour and 40 minute game Yeah, it's insane how much faster baseball has gotten and it's at the NFL is getting to be more boring to me than baseball I agree because it's they're stopping all the time.
It's here's a play. Let's out for a while It's their TV timeout. Let's throw flag for some stupid reason wide receivers now have to come up with They have to hold the ball for a certain amount of time. They have to have a note from their mom saying yes They did catch the ball all day got to complete the the process and I got to shake the rocks hand Kiss their wife tonight to prove they caught the ball I hate what they do with wide receivers because I love the passing game Yeah, but that does Brian play last year he had that ball that ball was caught He was reaching to get one extra yard He's that athletic knowing that he had to get there and the ball came out and complete the bullshit and aside from being wrong often Which often the wrong that's gonna happen even with replay.
Yes, that's just gonna happen The amount of time they take to be wrong is crazy And that's what's really becoming difficult as a football fan because they changed It's the only sport I know of with the amount of rules changed every season every season is in three or four rules changed and it's and it's fundamental stuff like Two or three years ago. I think it was the running back can it was head down if he's beyond Yeah, and they never call it consistently nobody none of these are three's another rules And I don't know if I can blame them just because the rules changed well They had the war the replacement rafts. Yeah, and I was talking about how terrible they were and then the rail routes came back and I thought like For all we know these are still the replacement refs We just feel better because we're told of the full-time rest But I was watching him there was just as many bad calls No thing is the replacement refs just look like they didn't know how to get together Yeah, we're the full-time rest the union refs when they would get together they made a strict firm You know, it's like that old man in a bar who's saying this horrible political ideology He's just he believes so like confident in his convictions You're just like all right fine. I'm gonna stop arguing with you even though I think you're wrong I'm just gonna walk away where these replacement routes just look like we we've we this is what happened Maybe we're not sure and then it's like fuck you We're gonna argue with you even more I mean also I don't know how the fuck you can act like any of these guys are actually able to referee that game is very fast These dudes are keeping up all and they're a huge yeah, it's so many moving parts at a speed.
That's not normal in nature I mean so football I agree with you though. Do you think that's the hardest game to rough? I? Don't know man.
I just think basketball because the courts 94 feet It's not like basketball He's very easy best was very tough because they're going freakishly fast too. Yeah, and the puck is Not always doing what you would think is physical Basically logic of what the puck does not say we're gonna redirect all that kind of what if you had shit ice. Yeah, that's another issue You talked about Tampa having real shit Well when the season goes deep the year the Hawks played the Bruins there was a lockout year in 2013 and So they went even deeper into June and that there was constantly about how their ice just was chopped It was brutal, but I think I don't know man It's baseball is tough too, and it's made a little bit easier Well, it's been made easier But also way more difficult with replay because have you noticed how people are sliding now? How they've everyone is now sliding in a way that ensures that the literal tag I mean it used to just be put the glimmer there.
Yeah, and now because of replay you have to you have to do You raise one of the greatest slides I've ever seen that we don't highlight from earlier this year and also the trout highlight from earlier this year Yeah, that one's crazy too, and it's immediate You know, it's a year after a year and a half after replay was really introduced in baseball and they've already adjusted how they attack the game It Super football's constantly changing its rules baseball within the last few years has really been changing its attack Yeah, and you think of defensive alignments I was trying to talk about this my dad's very old school with his baseball thought and he's just No, there's no good hitters anymore offenses are down. Why can't these guys hit like last year at the lowest run per games 1981 all this kind of stuff, and I just kind of brought up on the goal you see the defensive shifts There's it's constantly I'll see a guy where my god It's a single the middle now the second baseman was perfectly right there Yeah, and it makes sense and I remember him just like oh they should play everyone straight away And I go no they really shouldn't because they used to testicle data on someone where it's like this guy only has a 14% chance of hitting the ball to right to the right side of the infield Why have someone there why you know such a small chance? Why not stack the left side and take that away? Yeah, and that's where baseball is getting smarter, but they're not doing they're not really changing all the recently they've done Some rules.
Yeah, but it's it's minutia. It's around the game like it's it's how the game is presented more than The only big rule changes that you can review a play you can review a call which I'm fine with yeah because People fuck up, but they're implementing some stuff at the minor league levels And we're gonna talk about that because I want to make some predictions at the end of each I mean second sports podcast. I'll have the gas will talk about like some future predictions I've done this without making Gailie C to tell down a reappitcher and last week's up So make great cool. So right now the only ask you a little bit about the history of bread and make out I'm sure what you play growing up Baseball and basketball for the most part most mostly basketball because my dad was a big basketball guy Yeah, can we talk about this sure tell the story of your dad wanted to sell basketball to with a cat I stand yeah, let's hear this my dad and I think it was his friend Fanchak Rosnoff.
That's a name But he was my dad's for a long time Rosnoff was doing the play by play on an intramural basketball game in college because they did play by play on the college radio So I challenge this market my dad and my dad a tip slam on a rebound during the during the game and like you dig dunk He tips land a rebound. I mean, you know, yeah, it's more like a yeah, yeah, like a neighbor But um yeah, so my dad read somewhere that has a stand had you know Until like hundreds of millions maybe billions of dollars No, I think it was billions of dollars worth of unrefined crude oil underneath the country Which they couldn't refine until they both a pipeline to somewhere to refine it which I think they went up going to the Middle East with that Um, but he read about it and he said well shit, you know, it's getting popular in Eastern Europe because basketball I bet you we could sell these guys a professional basketball league and then they're all gonna be you know Oil bearings throwing money around like it's fucking nothing. Let's do this so they had meetings with two guys from a cosplayer an embassy They bought him a stake dinner gave him the pitch and then the guys wanted another stake dinner and during that second Stake dinner these guys from Kazakhstan basically said well what you're gonna need to do We're gonna need to have because the president or the the head of the government's son was gonna be one in charge of the whole league apparently He wanted yeah boss's son Yeah, he wanted motorcycle demonstrations during halftime because he was the guy like this specific for motor cross-type He's like really into motorcycles so like those metal orbs with a motorcycle inside of it and shit like trick shows Really on a basketball court in the middle of a game And they also wanted free Harley Davidson's for him and both of the guys that were brokering this thing the two dudes They were having dinner with her like we also would like each will need a Harley Davidson to keep this movement forward I was like you got two sticks fuck you Left so that was the end of his attempts to starting professional basketball league outside the box thinking though Yeah, he's always didn't have basketball yet. I don't I have not looked into it But I can give him another try hey Maybe we both have a lot of free time out here sure sure Um, but my dad my dad worked for the market basketball program for a while I'm in the 60s and 70s and then there's a He was good friends This guy PDAX on road a book called the city game about basketball and he was the book features I'm a wire who was a head coach and I was like the person who was the go for both of them I'm a waggy from Chicago to play it.
He's your new York. He played for the Knicks and then I knew it was a big M. Yay guy. Yeah, the name.
I just didn't know where he grew up playing ball Yeah, yeah, he's from New York played for the Knicks and then coach Marquette One decade was he and Marquette he was there in 60s and 70s and he won because he was after George Mike was at the Paul Yeah, he was like he was like He was going to be a step I think Remier was his head head at Paul and then he won the his last year market They won the national title in 77. You know Marquette's always had a very good basketball program. Yeah J. was schools in general do because it's the least expensive sport to be good at yeah Well, you just a gym they build a school on top of a hill people and they start a fucking basketball team You have the amazing how expensive all the other sports are yeah, like you know I love hockey, but in my dad played hockey in college people always that's why didn't you go out playing hockey I was too expensive.
Yeah, it's crazy. You know my parents are divorced and so at the time in which you think about that is Sure, you gotta ensure all the teams and all the kids now because I was times a bitch and all that's that's a very good sport In 30 years I'm gonna sue you for conditions and shit. So you got insured now and liability waivers and all of that I mean, it's a whole fucking thing. Yeah, that's nothing I want to say for the war with the future of contact sports is gonna go So all right you grew up playing basketball.
I take it by the looks of you, Brendan. Yeah, I want to judge you man by his size Yeah, I'm guessing power forward. Yeah, yeah You like me I feel like you were tall right away and then everyone caught up to you Well, and also was that the real reason with the tall kids I was I was shoot up later just broad shoulder I wasn't always taller than everyone else but I had like a large frame because I had that Irish all torso very short legs I very short legs. Yeah, my wife is five foot six.
I'm six one. My legs are one inch longer than hers. Jesus. I know Yeah, but I also like when I was an infant and I started crawling only half of my body was I was dragging one half of my body So what did they call you in the hospital?
Oh, they call I was eleven and a half pounds when I was born and poor mother Yeah, no, they called me boom boom man See me and that is a boxer who killed a man in the ring. Yeah, and they also called me the fridge after For didn't they bring another doctors to get a look? Oh, yeah, no, they like remember your sister telling this hilarious story When we roasted you for your birthday. Oh, yeah, it was I mean the whole hospital was unnoticed pretty much like all of Northwestern Hospital was Was fascinated with the size of mainly my head.
I did see I did see you Yeah, it's you had a big Irish potato and my melon in baby photos is I was gonna pay a bite out of right my little brother Sean was like that he was um he was about ten pounds But my sister was almost ten pounds. I was eight and my youngest sister was seven But yeah, he shot it was it was all had eleven and a half to and I remember just one time watching him when he was like six months And he banged his house. I'm really hard. I was like, oh my god, you okay?
I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm like, of course you're fine. You're wearing a helmet.
Yeah, it's like Anyhow, and then you played baseball. What position were there? Oh first base the first time I ever played catch with my lefty That's right lefty my mom freak told my dad that he like my dad got home from a shit day at work on like a Wednesday In the middle of the summer and I think I was four of four or five and my mom said I've been telling you for a month that you've got to go play catch with him You're gonna do it right now and handed him a hard ball. He's like no we need to do a tennis ball She says you're gonna do this fucking today.
They were getting a real fun about it Yeah, so we didn't play catch with the hard ball and the first time I had a ball thrown to me Oh, when I go up I was hitting the face and I broke my nose. Oh, so I'm saying a lot. Yeah, man So like I I would just like freeze if if a line shot was coming at me So it was weird that I was put it first base But I was because that's the position where you are throwing a ball every place like other than catcher, you know Yeah, so weird choice, but I played first which was fun I was always better at football as a kid than the baseball But I played like flag football nuts pads and stuff yeah on the last podcast I talked about how I I'll just recap real quickly for you because you probably this similar thing I wasn't allowed to play always ask because I always played tackle with my friends at the park Yeah, and I always dominated and I'm not being cocky I did I was really good and then I finally you know got to play his name to starter And then six days before first game against lane pack which is a bit cat that publicly rather I broke my leg Yeah, so I finally got left to play and I broke my legs You probably actually your parents were like we don't want you playing it's too dangerous and all that stuff, right? Well, my mom was was very against it until I was in eighth grade I think my dad finally was like he's got a place of bad football sure So I played in eighth grade and I went to my grade school my middle school I should say the graduating class of my middle school had 15 boys in their class Wow So we I went to a school in Rogers Park But we got busted for football to school in Evanston another Catholic school John who had a football team and they were like yeah If you want to send some kids up here, we'll let them play so it was like four of us that were on the football team I played center and that's it because it's pretty a player for basement center.
You're always touching the ball man Yeah, no, I always part of play you gotta have a brain to play center That's all I know but yeah, I played one season of football Well, I was I was named like offensive line MVP for the for the team for the year And then the next year went to a high school that did not have a football program Because saying it just got rid of their for their smart schools you went to Well, they didn't have a field on site. Yeah, I'm like going a lot of space Yeah, they used to take a bus and I was always unclear if it was a city bus or what because the only person who would talk about the team was the The math teacher who was on the team when it was discontinued in the 60s Which yeah, that's when I got rid of the football team in the 60s, so I guess they have one and then you went to market They didn't have a football team either right right, but why do you hate football so much, right? And you just don't want to be around it. I just don't why you hate America?
I know you're actually one of those American people when I the number of pictures of you that could easily have American flag waving in the background And you just screaming freedom Kind of shit you were a guy that I want everyone after you're listening to this podcast YouTube Brendan McGowan They're standing videos of you over the dozens. Yeah, one of the best storytellers I've ever heard and yeah You always have these great like American stories. You know totally good nicknames Well, we call you just be michy which is real standard for someone with your name Yeah, but then we called you the North Side Timmer wolf. Yeah, but she came up with that Dean Carlson That was me dude.
I came up with that name because I wrote I used to host a North Side Timmer wolf hosted the mic at a Sheffield's oh, yeah, that's right and I Would give Tony Blanco whose handling the ones and twos these absurd intros for me I think one of them was his name is all over the city like Richard daily and be a beef I'm gonna give you that one set of places. Yeah, so they would be like minutes long and you'd be like this is fucking no One's gonna send through this whole thing. I was like we're just gonna separate the wheat from the Jeff because it's a surprise comedy show There you go I want the intro to be unbearable for someone who would probably talk through a comedy show. Oh, that's my um, so yeah The North Side Timmer wolf was one of the many self-applied.
I remember that one's taking absurd nicknames Yeah, you are the one who will know I don't want to die I think it's the one of the greatest nicknames I've ever heard in my life you are all over that one I just like anything that affiliates to a side of a city Yeah, so you know like you know this outside this or the West Side that guy or I kind of like those to first start and then a timber wolf Is yeah, there's a miss our two most passable team But how often you hear a timber wolf not often you don't hear it often and then you always you had really big sideburns at the time Yeah, so I'm ahead. I'm like I could see that that's a really cool the North side timber wolf I like that you're kind of like it was fun. Um, just smoking a cigarette wearing a blazer like with a winner hand on it Was your look for a while it really loved that look you're you're underrated in your fashion sense I I hope brain to your girlfriend appreciates that you have a good fashion sense she she does When I when I actually you know get dressed up remember, you know is where like some sort of weird not weird But like you didn't have a good sweater sometimes or you had these jerry you know one jacket that was tannish and had elbow pads It's like somebody in elbow pads. It's almost like a old-school professor type You know the corner which and then you have your bears hat like the bears winter hat Yeah, I was like that just looks cool.
Yeah, and I got people think I was happy if I did that I always wanted to do that well. Thanks, man. Well, I remember one time my last winter in Chicago I was wearing a suit and head out I went ahead and I thought this was kind of cool And then immediately everyone's like you look like a fucking cowbell player getting off the bus And then I'm like all right while I'm pitching this look you got it. You gotta own it.
Yeah, I probably look a little uncomfortable Well, yeah, it's an odd look But I so basketball football basketball football and baseball those were your three and you keep going. It's fine fencing That's what I was gonna get to cuz there's two skier sports you do. Yeah, I mean the other second one time skier It's less so especially in the west. It's not at all rugby But let's talk about fencing sure I'm again another thing you had a great bit where you talked about fencing Yeah, and then the one line I love was like yeah, I grew up with money It was awesome.
Yeah, this fucking hilarious because every comic especially in Chicago at that time It's still this day. We're always gonna do that. I'm broke. I live in a garden apartment Yeah, I can't talk to like so cool to see someone who was in a big personality and was like yeah And I'm not going to apologize for that.
No great like if I still was spending money that wasn't mine like an asshole then I would Yeah, but also I thought you're youth. Yeah, I mean no one was saying like oh, right because you're not a trust fun kid So it's not like no, yeah, and also like I just want to own my privilege Like you can't talk about Fencing when you were in third grade without at least addressing the fact that you have to be a privileged Yeah, fucking dick time is engulfed to fence in your spare time That's come on but I went to the lab school which was that was the second or third I changed schools a lot But I went to the lab school which is in Hyde Park and it's part of the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago had like a Fencing club or a fencing team that was like yeah, if you want to fence We'll teach these kids how to fence and when when someone comes to you in third grade and says hey Do you want to have sword fights with your friends? You say yes, or like I'm not I'm not who amongst us and watch Robinhood It's weird to me that that sport is as as unpopular as is because it's a fucking sword fight It's two people having a sword fight like I don't know why Game of Thrones hasn't started a fencing boom just because ink right It's the way the movie dodgeball started dodgeball leagues again You think people would start to want to do sword fighting or fencing or I mean maybe it's because arms are getting cut off and shit And that's probably not yeah, but with fencing is not I mean no it's got a tip thing There's a little ball right there I don't know the rules to fence like that's like that's right you get someone and that's point and you stop and you go back You take the steps right yeah, it is a science to it There's a part of the body you need to hit and you need to hit it in a specific way you were the cup on the outside make your junk look bigger That's that's the only reason for that right yeah, yes your cod piece But yeah, I mean it's blast. I was fun.
I didn't really pursue it much more after that But it was it's crazy fun But you know, it's not like you can have a pin pickup fencing match Yeah, that's the thing about that like and that's the tough part with certain sports in America is that they'll never be popular because you can't pick up Right? That's what I was starting like Chris Rock talked about baseball's decline Yeah, and I said well a lot of that's just the way neighbors have changed and you can't play pickup baseball It's really hard because it's really hard to get 18 dudes together to walk around the neighborhoods with bats Yeah And you can just play you play 21 a basketball with three people in an alley football you can even do an all-time quarter You can five people one guy all ten quarter back to one to cover each other receiving passing You're gonna do any handouts unless you're an asshole. Yeah, anyway handoff in a pickup football game football is two one two mostly just sprinting It really it's just a sprint and even soccer I see people just make all will take two garbage cans together in that Same basketball it's one ball one ball soccer and basketball or one ball. That's why it's the most popular two World games, but you know even with that like any sport that isn't Something you could do one-on-one It's just becoming a ledger of the wealthy like Yeah, it requires it requires an amount of disposable income an amount of time that most people time not come and then other people who have that Time income.
Yeah, that's what you're matching it up with. Yeah Do you time to drive me from school when I leave it three to my soccer game an hour away or whatever? It's like no, I have a fucking job. Yeah To provide food for you both of your parents work now because there are no good jobs anymore, so sorry.
Yeah, hopefully there's a bus So then let's move on to your college. Oh sure. Yeah, rugby I'm not play rugby in high school size. I'm a good season of rugby the team was very good I was not very good the team that I played on you know it was freshman through seniors all in one team it was a club sport and The league I think got started mostly so that the Catholic Lee schools could have extra football practice Really?
They're only allotted amount of practices. Okay. Well, let's talk about this then. This is something a lot of people bring up It's a source of debate rugby versus football.
What's more violent explain the differences football's more violence and the difference is You are people say oh rugby they don't wear pads. No, they don't put these over in pads and football The rugby they don't wear pads. They also don't leave with their head they don't and in rugby all the passes are pitch backwards Backwards you see the people coming to blindside hits, but well, but it could be upon is a live ball whoever catches it catches it I mean the kickoff is an offensive movement right so that's that's a whole other thing though I want to talk about that in a moment, but football The speed at which you move and the confidence with which you hit because of the equipment You're willing to do things that you shouldn't be doing even with helmet on You know people talk about concussions a lot in sports and worried about concussions But the real problem is the sub-concussive hits something just below a concussion Like junior say I'm from what I understand never had a concussion in his rear Also, they didn't have the protocols that they have now to test. Yeah He's gonna sit down a little bit and come again.
So that's probably there's no way that's true I'm sure he had one if not more he had to it, but it's the way it's diagnosed I mean it goes it used to be someone was just shell shock now. It's called PTSD Yeah, and you know he's like you said before he just always he's got his clock run a little baby fine So I'm not playing the normal back out there. No problem. I mean the it's not just time to throw up and then get back out there the dementia the Smother head injury thing yeah the PTI oh yeah, we'll pretend it is whatever no Post traumatic or Peace here something but it's it's the acronym for the thing that most of these football players that are getting It's more prevalent in offensive and defensive lineman than anyone else because they hit at a In amount of force and power that causes a near concussion almost every time yeah for ages away Right inches away.
Yeah, so football Because the size of these people because of the fact that it's Brief in the idea this whole mentality. I mean it's the modern military industrial complex as a sport You know what I mean? It's just a choir territory and get to Berlin and kill Hitler which is going to touch up But I would like that if someone said he just you just kill that's a fun way to watch the game I said some fun about watch you know football just a yard past he just killed it. Yeah, I mean it's Pretty great.
Um, it's a normity on a good sidekick, but you can't do it because that's not actually a war it's hard Yeah, it's a complex thing, but um the Football is just the amount of people that have because there's that really a rainbow player was a museum You remember this a guy who played for the all-blacks was it the all-blacks in New Zealand was that obviously rules football someone played rugby at High level New Zealand or Australia I'm forgetting the name ended up going to become a punter for there's a cardinals I want to say you didn't remember this I think so maybe a decade or so ago or even longer Yeah, and all it is he was in some interview or all of his rugby pals were like all you were in pads and The rugby guys were getting shit acting like you're posting out because you're playing in sport. We're just out there And he said it was funny because you have no idea these guys are the size of Mack trucks me hit that way Yeah, they didn't wear pads there'd be deaths like you would no idea what you're talking about also wearing the helmet makes even more dangerous Because you don't you're not protecting you think you're covered. Yeah, I just play tackle football the time and there was no One's leading with their fucking head that'd be psychotic Maybe there'd be one spaz who would just throw his body around eventually we stopped calling him because it was like this kid He needs riddling first of all we all believe and second of all it's like we just you can't have someone who just throw on their body I mean we would get that good like which is you know wrestling with a double-like train where you get low and just Lift the guys legs. I'm driving to his back.
That's just good fun I mean you might be doing that but we weren't doing any like just leading with the fucking head when no one's wearing pads and football That's crazy. I've never seen a serial killer now positive I've never seen a rugby tackle that would have made the old ESPN segment jacked up Do you remember that? And it fell down like at the end of the day They'll be the biggest hits and then we see the graphic if I remember yeah, it was dumb But it was also like the biggest hits of the day I've never seen a rugby tackle that would even make that segment because Football your sprinting rugby is is like soccer. There's the ball is almost always in play.
Yes, there's not as much Stop it. Well, that's why I like about rugby is very fun to watch I wish it would get you a more popular America It will it will after these summer Olympics the next summer Olympics because it's right is in the next summer Olympics in the US are very good They are very very very good. So we're gonna enjoy it. Oh, hold on.
I think your little sneak peek to your predictions Rugby will be popularity. Yes, let me ask you this is a question of love I will ask every podcast your favorite sports moment in your life whether it be something personal that you did maybe going to a game Whatever you want the NBA all-star game that was in Cleveland. I forget what year it was Early in Iverson's career my dad and I went and there was a fan day thing and I went with my dad And they had a booth where you went in and you put on headsets and you did the commentary on a famous highlight So we both had headsets on and did commentary of John Paxson's three-pointer to put the Bulls over the suns. Yeah And it was one of the coolest things that I've ever done You still have that they give you the tape.
I have no idea where the tape is I'm sure my mom has it in a trunk somewhere But I just remember watching it with my dad and in the video I'm pushing for Horace Grant getting a lot of credit because he's the one who had the as he kicks it out Two packs in on that three-pointer then Phoenix has a chance to come back Kevin Johnson drives a lane Horace Grant Was flannin up nowhere and blocks the shot and I'm sure is a big block He had the assist on the three-pointer and the block to seal the game and no one wants to talk about it Horace Grant was the second best player in that series next Jordan I remember pippin kind of having a little bit of a bad series against Phoenix Yeah, do you remember how they had some bad finals now that I recall? Do you remember how they burned Horace Grant when he left town to yeah, I remember that that was that was really ugly That was ugly that was that he left up to the 93 94 season. I think he wanted to stay there was something with money Oh, there was definitely something because it's always with money. Well another team shut up with way more money Yeah, and then the polls probably made it seem like you would still get them somewhat of a discount But they're off was pre insulting.
Yeah, I'm sure who's coming off an all-star Yeah, or a scramby the also team the year after Jordan left in 94 That was one of the things and we both grew up and here's one I'm gonna talk about our Chicago youth We both grew up watching the Bulls in the 90s and we're both die-hard Cubs and Bears fans and Blackhawks Do you remember after the year after Jordan left and the Bulls had a good season? They won 56 or 57 games Yeah, I remember that in the second round in seven games in the Knicks on Hugh Hollins's call Yeah, it was a bad call there and that team wasn't winning a title by the way There's a lot of people that have a mixed you can there's this is one of my problems with sports people will remember a thing and The emotion that they felt like the amount of betrayal they felt with you Hollins They want to make it a bigger deal because of how set they are about it It's a personal thing for them So they make it the Bulls didn't get better over time because you're still upset about that thing like they yes They got screwed they weren't winning that title either. No, they were two separate things and they were a good team But what people don't realize is that home. Yeah, I remember liking India a lot that season because I really just got into the Bulls I don't remember watching the Bulls Lakers a little too young.
I remember being on I don't remember being into it I think it was on TV, but I probably was playing with you know X-Men action figures or whatever the hell was the digit hurdles and the if you not in the background, you know It's a little too young and then I remember watching the Trailblazers series vividly where I first started getting the stats and checking box scores And then the whole 93 90 to when we beat Phoenix watching that like religiously and I was so depressed when Jordan retired and the next year I did remember and my dad kind of talking about this when he goes Jordan's effect is like psychosomatic in a way where now that He's gone everyone in the NBA is like oh, we have a chance to win now Yeah, so all the teams really played great and the Bulls themselves played better because they were out to prove something And they just played three seasons under the best player of all times Of course, but if you took that same group that same roster than anything before Bulls and they had never played the previous seasons That's Jean-Pierre Jordan that team 45 ones. They were 57 42 I mean the league was crazy then too because you had six teams that were trying to be the Jordan killers Yeah, you know like the next were the only ones that open they admitted it But that Houston team are you shitting me with that roster? Of course they're trying to be Jordan like and then when Jordan's gone like oh Let's get everything we can and make sure that we win because how who knows how long this is actually gonna last We're building rosters that way. Yeah, there were so many dominant centers, which is really lacking in the NBA today Well, I mean in a sense The NBA's So many teams are not asking other center because they want their center to do something else Which is go to the three-point line and stretch the defense Yeah, let's play the floor, you know and that that is also to talk about current sports real quick I live in LA I don't think people realize how big of a mistake it was to not draft Julia Loca for At number two because that dude can straight up ball.
I I get why they didn't because The guy they took a year before Whose name I'm forgetting I can't remember either I'm starting to slowly walk to West Coast. Yeah, I've been out here for almost a year and a half now You've been under foot three years now two and a half three Yeah, so yeah, I'm starting to slowly pick up on LA basketball because you know basketball is the ones thing here where I feel like Yeah, these people are not hard fans. Oh, yeah, absolutely. We know Dodgers.
They show up lately early There's a section of Dodgers fans that are well hard for I think that all like I've met a lot of really hardcore Dodger fans I also think that people arrive late and leave early purely because of the infrastructure of that stadium being absolute garbage Yeah, there's one two lane road in and out of that fucking building It is and then there's no parking buildings. There's no structures It's just open parking so you could park and then you'll take another 20 minutes to walk to the gate then to gate to your seats I went to a cubs Dodgers game their last year and one game that comes lost unfortunately and it took us we couldn't remember We parked yeah, I remember those by trying remember those trees specifically and then he's like they're trees like that everywhere Yeah, some of a bitch and yeah, it was a very convenient. It's a nice enough stadium now It's okay. I'll just randal is the dude's name Joyce Randall got Another doesn't need a lot of room to work down low so I get what I didn't take a look for you He's a wing game now.
Yeah point guards. It was for a while his point guards now They're kind of getting off that a little bit and it's more you know big big wings guys It was like, you know, that's why I was really stupid that Cleveland traded Angel Wiggins Angel Williams was a guy that a flabron just had the patients could turn into a Scotty different type of six eight plays great D I mean his shooting skills will get better as he gets as he moves on Yeah, but it's stupid because that dude from Boston broke Kevin or separate Kevin love shoulder. That's why stupid It's really it's really it's Kevin loves there and actually yeah, but they were struggling with Kevin love at times getting together I don't finish with the number two seed and they probably would have rolled through the playoffs only because I thought Atlanta was over Raven most of the year. I really did I didn't I because to me when I watched Atlanta I was like yeah Kyle Corver will be able to get free for a game He's not getting free for a best of seven series and he was their best player LeBron in the New York Police Department broke one of their other best players so yeah, they can hurt LeBron took a Bunch of dudes you have never heard of to the fucking finals with Kevin love there It's a whole different name.
I heard of a lot of those guys. It's like fellow basketball, but okay, so my god was a starter last year They traded two first round picks one. I'm not gonna I really can't stand with people who the book was my spot You don't watch basketball no no no you played 45 games He started every game he played and was a decent player Delavado that became a national name That's true, but was that because of the Broners because really kicking into that guy? Yeah Yeah, well kicking it out to anyone who's open is part of why the bronze grain By any superstars great.
That's why in the NBA if you're a superstar in order to be considered one of the all-time greats You have to win a ring yeah because of your one of five guys. You're great You could really you're the ex factor It's the sport it's the sport we're having the best player live is the most important thing I mean look at you we just talk about what the NBA would Jordan left so Steph Curry though In game one head of the finals was great with curry guarding him with not curry with a curry Irving Guardian Oh, you're also needed a new leg, but Kyrie Irving had a good game in game one I know he got her at the end He broke his kneecap at the end of overtime Yeah, and in the next two games Delavado garden curry and shut him down I agree with you on offense LeBron made Delavado king of the threes But Delavado to me is a better defensive player than Kyrie Irving and I think that's very clear Perry every's made a glass. We know that about him now. He's sure you're here He'll miss 25 games next year.
We that's a guarantee. This should be any surprise Are you you're not saying that Delavado is a better player than Kyrie Irving? Of course not okay I'm saying he's better defensive I got you okay I'm saying he made a better defensive impact in those if you look at game to a game where he watched if you watch it He was more impactful Kyrie Irving had a big block at the end of game one to send it No, he also was taking defense off It looked like to me because of his injury because they didn't know where the points were coming from if not LeBron So he had to be able to knock it down when he got the ball in his hands. He hit it again, so To kill himself to kill him like Jordan did this I respect LeBron a lot more for these last finals because he finally said you know what I'm gonna go down swinging We're in other finals with Miami when he had all the weapons He would disappear when she got taught in this series.
He did disappear. He got tougher He said you know what if I have to shoot every time down? I'm gonna do that and then I respect yeah I respect that I just there's no NBA player that goes 100% of the time both sides of the floor the game Jordan would take it off on the offense He would just take off into positions off every now and again to keep it safe Yeah, you have to do you have to so hopefully the problem bigger than I would do that next year Yeah, cuz I thought I'm like why are you going so hard in the first and second quarter? You got the NBA works No, it's also hard in the first and quarter and people always bring this up to make it like LeBron isn't one of the greatest players that ever He is he's on run.
He's not much more but for sure people always want to bring this up his stats in the fourth quarter in the finals And in the playoffs it's like well Let's see he's got two and sometimes three people on him in the fourth quarter That's why he's trying to fill it up in the first and second quarter He wants to break out to a lead that makes it irrelevant. I could see that but I watched every minute of that series except for maybe one game And there was just a lot of times early in games where it's like I thought he could have paced himself a little bit Sure because he was just missing open shots to the end of the game and you're wearing turn your legs He's missing free throws. Yeah, I just played a shitload of all man. Oh, no, he has five finals in a row Yeah, and plus an Olympics in there.
He definitely needs if I were him I would have to take off the month of November Yes, it's it when your team is that good and the playoffs are the way they are you don't need you only need to be one of the top four seats Yeah, and he's a superstar So he calls on the road to a home home court is not what it used to be no and I also like it's not like they're playing WNBA Minutes, you know, that's what he's playing. I think forty seven minutes forty six four seven minutes Oh, no, I'm sorry over time. I'm ready to make myself clear WNBA players play 11 months out of the year because they finish in the WNBA and then they go to Russia and play in the pro league in Russia Do they really make a shitload of money and I know that they play 11 months out of the year. It's insane What is that where he's what thirty five thousand dollars money man?
It's pretty low. Yeah, so You know that when people talk about wearing tear in just someone's play a lot of minutes I get that those are NBA minutes and that's all different animal but All right, well, we've talked about yeah, yeah, I'm sorry Yeah, I want to finish we've gone a little long time stuff and a lot of that was me. No one on you our Chicago Cubs Yes, looking good right now looking good you and I were on board with the earth's in the plan from day one The day that Theo Epstein was acquired by the Chicago Cubs, which is still I still can't believe that happened that for the Cubs or as a As an organization at the time to do it fine new owner trying to build a new culture But the culture around the Cubs for so long makes you feel like it's insane that they brought in the guy who led the red Sox to Breaking their quote unquote curse, which I don't actually believe it. Not only because either but there was still a drought.
Yeah, I read it It's still I use two time world series winner and they gave they gave him a ring for this last world series threat sex Is they that was mostly TV built? Yeah, it was when they hired the arm Which means so it was like all right we finally got a premier guy and then you know you hear older Cops, we'd be like all that was Dale screen before any McPhels We've gotten it before we'll wait and see what to me what I like about Theo Maybe because it's like I was talking about this with some recently someone I know really smart guy But he's he has a job works like why are you wasting your brain on that because it's like a love do Epstein has a law degree Yeah, he has his JD and he got it in his spare time So we talked to agents better. This is a with to Yale Yes, major in economics then while he was working as an assistant with San Diego I think he got in an entry level was working in the front office decided I'm gonna take my class at San Diego State and get my JD But he's never taking up the bar anywhere right because he has no desire to be a lawyer right? He just wanted to do that I mean he's a very very bright guy he could be anything yeah anything you want to understand from what I understand But that's entirely likely that this there's not a whole lot of baseball in this future after this Cubs team wins a world series He wants to go find a problem fix it.
He likes to show up fix a problem and leave I just what I will respect the most about this whole resurgence of the Cubs you know everyone talks about the young town How exciting is right now is that they didn't lie they came around? I mean actually no listen no one listen no one listen no yeah, well Theo said right away He goes hey, we're basically told him. We're gonna be bad for a few years I'm gonna write your articles for you. Yeah, this is what you're gonna say for the next five to seven years Is this the same thing that happened in Boston?
And he told them what's gonna happen and then the exact article headlines and coverage that he said they would write They wrote because they didn't listen to him. I compare it to again versus in Chicago But it's just such a it's the freshest example for those listening who aren't as familiar the Cubs were intentionally bad Is really the only way to say it for I would six six seasons I wasn't that long well cuz Theo came in his first season was 2012 they were bad But then they started being intentionally their intention going to go over there for the three seasons before and that's the thing that people don't realize in sports in general And every city has dealt with the rebuild. Yes, there's a difference between sucking and rebuilding when you I've seen took over This was legitimately the first actual rebuild the Cubs have really ever had and I've heard tons of my uncles and people of that Those generations say oh, they've rebuilt it a bunch. No, they've sucked.
That's different when like the oh six cups Yeah, oh five oh six they went out and got those six cubs almost lost a hundred games They lost 97 games in 2006 when you and some people like well That was a rebuilding year. No wasn't rebuilding. They just sucked because that's not rebuilding when you trade three prospects for one Pierre it's not rebuilding one good Jack Jones with a three-year deal. It's not rebuilding We'll sign up in the other later down here Jeremy Burnett's like those are rebuilding signs rebuilding is we're gonna get rid of all of our old players and Purely young players and if we do sign anybody's gonna be to a short-term deal hoping to flip them for more prospects Which was like the biggest genius part of that was we got Jake Darietta Pedro stroke and Neil Ramirez came over in I believe the guards are trading the guards are trading I'll break that one down Michael to I don't might not turn up to anything He was by the way, he was just threw him in yeah, cuz he was once a highly proud prospect, but then he could see yeah Yeah, they had they got Neel Ramirez CJ Edwards But I really want to see him and Justin Graham all three of those guys could be a future nasty boys of a bullpen Yeah, very young I think do they want Edwards in the bullpen?
I think they're gonna bring up they might bring the time up he's in the bullpen right now See I thought they would be my third spot starts since the fifth starter I thought they would too, but not because they think they're gonna trade for a fifth starter Which would be a start up you stud and they were yeah well There's a new theory of keeping the only few other guys are thinking with baseball because there's so many interesting young arms Yeah, I'm off in the bullpen keep less innings Yeah, this is why I like just just a margin for the white Sox isn't having that great a year really I was gonna get a hell of an offer because he has sold little innings on her's arm They traded under a bullpen and all that they traded a half of a season of that dude Yeah, look at that and Jason Hale that trade basically half of a season of Jason Ham who we got back and Jeff's Marja naded Billy McKinney who was a top 100 prospector's round up Addison Russell Who's your 21 year-old youngest player and nationally starting its like a base who's been a little disappointed But so so young you know that your story I would contend he has not been disappointing defensively has something fantastic and offensively not as much because You got to think about two things he does not have people on base in front of him as often as other people in that one That's very bad for the picture and he's the protection behind him Fowler's in 239 dude. Yeah, he's not basically 10 as he's been the most disappointing player him and cast art to me And I'm expecting a big half from Fowler Fowler Fowler won some games early They were still figuring it out because he had some popper which is weird Remember he like I think he's like nine or ten home run I think he told him to lay off the pop because he's supposed to be getting on base Yeah, but yeah, yeah that well, he had a big home running in Colorado. Yeah, I thought Roy Hawkins Yeah, which was nice. So he wants some games really and and I mean, it's not I don't worry about him not playing well Let me say this this season if they make a playoffs great I'm not as as I'm not gonna be upset about anything with the end of this season because I've loved what I've seen so far and What I've seen is a really fun team fun team that is along there having a baseball right last dude And then all Joe Madden I think it's a lot Joe Madden I think a lot of it is Rizzo and Bryant and Rizzo especially to me being 25 but he leaves that team like a 33 year old veteran He's a fucking cancer survivor that just hangs out with kids who are fighting cancer really weird all day his spare time He's just go to hospital.
I'm saying that's the majority of what he does with his spare time plays baseball And he says what's up to says you know, it's the hospitals and hang out with sick kids like what do you the great dude? He's any little guy of the daughter I would set him up He does like seem to be fucking hilarious to is everyone laughing whenever he's talking Laughing he's he's got the and he's what I like about him is every year. He's Fixed whatever weakness he's had remember he couldn't have left He's at all right now. He's the best at hitting left He's better than most he's the highest on base percets against lefties in all of baseball I mean a carrera it was a triple crown on our number two.
He also so that was his big thing he fixed last year Yeah last year he was pretty bad with one of his four in position this series Over 300 with one of his own position every year he's found a weakness and improved on it I don't know what after I think he will want to know before he's 30 That's my prediction to but I think the main thing about the culture of the team that I've liked is is Who's this there's one big name for agent? You remember growing up the Cubs that they would put on the field. Yeah, it was just free agent free agent free agent really big name Just let's scrappy big name. Chuck blower.
We got Chuck blower for season and a half sometimes and it's just like I mean how long was Fred McGriff on the team two and a half years you and a half years ago that we traded for but Then ten days to wait for no trade clause before we finally came over and then it's yeah I remember that but it's also like these guys don't play with each other long enough to build any kind of relationship The whole thing with baseball and we know it's such a craps should come play off time because it's 162 game regular season Then it's broken down into a one game wild card None of best of five and it's not representative of what you just did where other sports 81 games are E2 games best of seven throughout the whole thing makes sense football is one game So the playoffs are one game. Yeah baseball It's just and the whole idea was that the idea is to go to the class every year for 10 years and then you'll win a world Series somewhere in there. Yeah, which is what the red Sox did the Braves. Yeah people were like 14 playoffs only one world So I don't fucking take that.
Yeah, and what's fun about this team is there in every game They're citing there's a fun atmosphere there playing the game right and even though there's still some mistakes because they're young You let that go it reminds me again of you know How about the rebuilding thing people see the black-oxing of like the black-ox they're doing exactly that no one remembers the four years they Suck before every team that becomes a dynasty sucked for years before the Bulls dynasty They were bad for four or five years before then they were the best team ever. Yeah, that's the history That every team has had that even the Yankees starting in the 90s when the world's there's 96 the Yankees from the late 80s early 90s were dog shit Yes, so we're terrible. Yeah, I'll tell you this much whenever someone says something like that That is someone who didn't start watching the black-hogs until work they got great or just any sport Yeah, because that's just how it goes. This is fun.
It's like a black-hox. No wait Let me also say this I don't give a shit if you're a fan wagon fan because you're having your fun and your fun will never affect my fun Unless you're coming over my table and yelling at me. Yeah, you're not your fun. It was a very good problem Sure, you spend money, but I'll help my payroll But this worry about who's a fair like this need for legitimacy in sports as a fan none of this is real Like I'm a superstar politics.
Yeah, these are not your accomplishments. So just have fun watching them. Whatever that needs to be joyo I agree with you 100% now. Let's end with some future stuff.
Oh sure from baseball. I want to bring up The baseball rules now. They're starting at the mind level doing pitch clock. Does that come to me to baseball next year?
I don't know what next year, but soon. Yeah, and is that a good thing? No, you don't like the pitch clock I don't like something that affects someone at work. Do you know what I mean?
There are guys there are guys that part of their Thing is no one to slow down the game. They don't speed it up. Yes, okay It's really important especially when I'm based part of the chassis with baseball. Yeah, so that one you do think it's gonna come eventually I think so.
I don't know. It's that's hard. I think that the changes that are gonna become a baseball sooner. What changes do you think?
Let's just do it that way. Uh, and L. D. H.
is coming. I know so soon our boy Kyle Swarber will be perfect for that. Yeah, or I think go back it's great this year though. I think so too.
Who needs to go? Well, they'll try to pack it in an American League team. Yeah, that's true for a DH stuff He's a young prospect. They still need bullpen.
It's crazy that they still need bullpen. Yeah, or if they're gonna try to get a Start he could get thrown in you throw it you do like a I'll contra or maybe not even him because he's not a tote anymore But like Elmore and Volga back. No, you don't trade. You don't trade Elmore.
You don't think so? No, he's he's gold. Oh shit I don't care. He's gold glove and center.
I would agree if we had a frickly field and have the easiest center field to play in all baseball Yeah, but half those games on the road true, but it's still half a mile right really yeah Let's go see the way there. I hope Elmore turns around. I think he will one of these but we both know though one of these Processes is gonna be a bust. Oh, yeah, yeah one of them's gonna be yeah Which one I'm thinking tomorrow I'm still thinking it's bias.
Yeah, I guess so but I still kind of forget because bias was a hunter guy He wasn't one of the half Steve Rapix. Yeah, but it's unfortunate to me that they just wish they would trade them I was gonna trade before that you're started because I see him as Castro with power. Yeah, it's Castro to me as a guy who I never liked You've played approaches bad as his it's so it's a Prostrated his brother is a there'll be either was one inning early in the year where Rizzo walked working account putting pressure on the That's what I love about full counts Rizzo said fast he goes it puts stress on the picture I want everyone of my bass to put stress on the picture. I love that statement So he draws a walk Brian true walk solar drawer walk and all these great at bath where they were fighting off the tough stuff laying off the shit Just great at bath not giving into the picture all bases loaded Castro comes out first pitch slider foot outside tries to pull it Ground ball to shorts out eating any double play.
I was like you piece of shit Yeah, if you were getting paid what you were and the baseball wasn't a business You would have gotten caught you wouldn't have been allowed to take the fucking field Yeah, that was 19. I would love that I want to see one man should be like you what you just do is so bad I want you to turn in your jersey and I want you to fucking think long hard about what you've done in your future But you're clearly off this team, but my advice to you to think about what you just did someone security Like I would love for that clear your life a day to fade mid game mid game Yeah, I'll fucking any go to great, but all right, so you see the DH home and yeah, and you want it You want it? I do I do I do I'm in the home a stick of like double switches and stuff is over for me Yeah, I just they do it to speed up the game as much as I still love the game the way it is It does give me a slower like haven't I very you know, I'm sorry It would slow down the game to have the DH because you get more advanced because you got better kids more offense though But it's still a clear like what it all comes down to for me forever Home runs make picks or rack and chicks wack. You know me always was is will be advantage for the AL in a sport That should be fair.
Well, that's what either give it in both things are having both things You get three outs nine times. Yeah, I'm at that point now where I used to be very much like now I want the purity of the game because I like the strategy of it the double switch that having you know Because it made an element in respect nationally managers so much more. Yeah, so any other bold predictions for sports in general Rugby will be very popular. I think rugby will be People talking about how the cross is taking the place of football with high school kids because so many parents are getting their kids out of Football, I think rugby after the summer Olympics will also become very popular because this summer Olympics is going to be a condensed version of traditional rugby Because to have a rugby international tournament in the time that the Olympics takes place would kill people and after the popularity of the US women's soccer I can see national sports, you know more national pride going on.
I could see rugby getting popular after that Well, that makes complete sense. Normally it's 15 on 15 for 16 minutes This is seven on seven for 15 minutes and it just wins prints and people just flying all over the place I mean it's a really football is what it feels like. It's great. It's the other hours pub people filled up now Yeah, I mean the best guy on the US team did just I'm with the Detroit Lions, but There's always wide receivers that don't get the rest of the NFL better than available for this or sure Yeah, I'm all right.
That's great. I'm gonna save you this for another pocket Okay, I will definitely have you on again. I'm local of course man You're gonna for at all come football season. We'll talk bears with you Absolutely because you know, you know the bears yeah We'll get more into football and of course basketball also This will be something for everyone listening next time you're on and you got some progressive views and you mentioned WV With been playing Russia, we're gonna figure out a way to make women's sport popular.
I mean, yeah, two white boys It's gonna be a good job of that on their own, but yeah, I mean, you know, you got good business sense too. Okay You've got that from your dad. All right, I figured what we're gonna hash it out sounds good I had a real butcher on the show making daily before that we kind of mentioned some stuff words like what we do with it And because it's one of those things where my little sister's plays college volleyball and I think it's very exciting And I was like I wish more people appreciated this yeah, so many of those sports are fun as fuck live But they just don't translate so much like it's gotta be great on TV. All right, where could I work it out?
