Brent Marsh & Tri-State Crematory | Perplexing | Ep.96 Part 2

from Perplexed Podcasts · host Kate & Sarah

Send us Fan MailThe Tri-State Crematory scandal was one of the most infamous incidents in the U.S. funeral industry. It took place in Noble, Georgia, in early 2002 when it was discovered that the crematory, owned and operated by the Marsh family, had not been properly cremating bodies for several years. Instead of cremating the remains, the crematory owner, Ray Brent Marsh, had been storing or discarding bodies in various locations on the property. Hundreds of decomposed and uncremated bodies were found, leading to public outrage and numerous legal consequences. The discovery came after a propane delivery driver noticed a skull on the property and reported it to authorities. Further investigations revealed that Marsh had mishandled at least 334 bodies. Many families believed their loved ones had been cremated and had received ashes, but it was found that the crematory had given them cement powder or other materials instead of actual remains. The aftermath included several lawsuits from the affected families, as well as changes in regulations for crematories in Georgia and other states. Marsh pleaded guilty to various charges, including theft by deception, and was sentenced to prison in 2004. Support the showThank you for listening.
