Virgin births, also known as parthenogenesis, are a natural process that occurs in some animals when an unfertilized egg develops into an embryo. The term comes from the Greek words parthénos, meaning "virgin", and génesis, meaning "creation". Parthenogenesis is more common in some invertebrates, such as insects, and rarer in vertebrates. However, it has been observed in many species of vertebrates, including fish, lizards, snakes, and sharks. Parthenogenesis is often triggered when there aren't many males around, which is why it's more common in captive animals. For example, a captive bonnethead shark gave birth to a female offspring without any males around for three years. Parthenogenic young can be either full or half clones of the mother. Half clones have less genetic diversity than full clones because they inherit half of their mother's genetic diversity.
