Heads of states from all parts of the world descended on Johannesburg South Africa last week to witness the 10th annual BRICS Summit. New measures to strengthen cooperation on innovation and industrialisation were taken at the end of the summit. The Chinese president Xi Jinping, noted in this speech that efforts should be made to fully unlock economic potential and resolute in rejecting unilateralism and protectionism. A consensus was reached that BRICS is not just about the five countries, it is about creating a partnership with the rest of the world, especially developing countries.To help us unpack the discussion for the day, we are joined by: • Ian Cruickshanks is the Chief Economist at the South African Institute for Race Relations• Victor Kgomoeswana is the author of Africa is Open to Business and a public speaker on African business affairs • Jennifer Wells is an intern at Amnesty International South Africa focussing on Justice and Accountability
