Bridging the Generation Gap
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
This sermon, titled "Bridging the Generation Gap," draws on the Book of Jonah as the church begins the Fast of Nineveh. Fr Pishoy recalls how Nineveh repented after Jonah's warning, but only two generations later the prophet Nahum pronounced judgment on the same city, which had fallen back into evil — the lesson being that one generation failed to pass down the memory of God's mercy to the next. A parallel is drawn to Israel after entering the Promised Land, where a generation that didn't personally witness God's works turned to idolatry, illustrating a "broken chain" of faith transmission. The sermon addresses the modern generation gap in the church — older members who feel dismissed as outdated, and younger members whose gifts aren't given enough trust to lead.
