Pump it, pump it. We are pumping it with a black eyed peas on bringing it home with Sarah and Sunil. Where could this possibly be going? I love it.
I think it's getting us pumped up about cleaning. Well, I'll tell you, Billboard released the top 20 songs for cleaning. And this on by the list. Pump it by the black eyed peas.
This is the list of songs that you can put on when you are ready to declutter and just really start throwing some stuff out that should have been going a long time ago. Well, I totally pictured myself with a bump. Yeah, I mean pumping out to the trash. I love it.
So yes, guys, today on bringing it home, we're going to talk about decluttering and just getting rid of stuff. Sunil, is this something that is hurting it in your life? I love throwing stuff away and I'm behind on doing it. It is rather free.
Oh, it really makes me feel so good when I get rid of things that we don't need, don't use, and they're taking up valuable space. So this topic hit home with me, because as you know, our listeners might not know, my family, we just recently moved out of our home. And wow, the stuff. Yes.
I had no idea. They called us up. Yes, in no time. You know, Josh and I have been married almost 16 years, and he lived there before we got married.
And then we've added two kids in that time frame. So four people collect a lot of things. OK. So I thought this would be a fun topic for us to talk about and motivate people, because there are a lot of benefits to decluttering your life.
OK. Your life, not just your house. Well, it leads to less stress. This is going to be OK.
So there's a lot of benefits. You know, less to clean. If you get rid of things, it's less you got to deal with. Less to organize.
You know, that's a positive. Less stress, like I said, if you live with lots of stuff, it overwhelms you and that leads to stress. Less debt, strangely enough. Less debt.
Yes, can come from getting rid of things, because you're not spending money to replace it. You're actually getting rid of things though. Oh, OK. So those are some great reasons to declutter.
OK. So let's talk about through some tips here to declutter. I think some of these are really helpful. And by no means are we saying y'all jump in and do all the ones we're going to share.
If you hear one that sticks out to you, try that one. OK. Because it could be overwhelming, especially if you've got it. Like I had a major closet that I just kept shutting the door.
You know? Just one closet? Well, that's all I'm going to share. Oh, OK.
Don't leave me out here by myself. But start small when it comes to time. Give yourself five or 10 minutes to declutter. I can't declutter in five or 10 minutes.
Well, if it's overwhelming, don't feel like, OK, I don't even know where to start. OK. So start small. You may find that you're OK moving into more time.
But you may start in a small area with a small amount of time and get accomplishment from that. OK. So that's one to try. Another one, I hope this was interesting.
Give one item a day. Oh, excuse me. One item away each day. So that would equal removing 365 things from your house in a year.
That's crazy. But if you think about it, if you all went home and walked to your house, you could pick out more than one thing that you're willing to part with. Or if it's been in the closet for five years, do we still need it? If it's at the bottom, you don't know what's there.
Right. You're going to be surprised when you clean out your closet. Yes. It's like, it's come from.
I found some Christmas dishes that I didn't even know I had. What's the nice? Yes, I kept them. And I was like, why have I been using these?
So you know, but there was plenty of other things that were nice that I still decided to part with. OK. I like this idea. Get one trash bag and fill it up and be done.
Like, fill it up, OK? Oh, I can do that. Like, you know, this is a kind of ties in here with that time. If I can fill one trash bag, walk through, fill one trash bag, donate it to a location in your community.
If it's trash, if it's broken, just put it in the trash can and move on. But you hold on to things and you think, well, I may fix it. I may get that part for it later. And I mean, that was 10 years ago.
And it's still here. And I haven't done anything with it. So you're not going to fix it. Get rid of it.
Oh, OK. I'll have. Donate close. You don't wear.
This is something that I try. Yeah, I like doing this. Yes. Even if it's still in style or something that you like, but you don't love it anymore.
If you haven't worn it in a year, you're probably not going to wear it. Would have it has a button in like five. Don't get rid of it. They don't know it.
You know, and it's different. I know a lot of people use when they go through their closets. They turn their hangers the opposite way. And then the next year or season or whatever, if they haven't worn it, like they haven't gotten it off the hanger and the hanger still facing backwards, then they.
Oh, you know, it's been a year. Yeah. So that's a tip you could try. Do that like on new years.
You could. And then like every year on January the bars switched. Yeah, I don't know. Well, but it's true.
Yeah. You know, give yourself a time. When you do this, I'm going to come back in a year. If it's still facing backwards, I haven't worn it.
Or if I still can't blame it. Yeah, get rid of it. Make a decluttering checklist. You and I are list people.
Yes. So that may, some people need to write things down. And I'm one of those people because I love to check it off. Oh, it's done.
That is a feeling of accomplishment. So if you got more than one closet, you want to be clattered, write that down. And tackle one at a time and mark it off. OK.
And I mean, you could even get more specific and say, the top shelf in the closet, the hangers in the closet, the floor. You could. I'm not saying I personally have anything in all of those locations. Right.
No gesture in here, girl. So this is something that the author of this article that I was reading suggested. It's called the 12, 12 challenge. OK.
OK. 12 items to throw away. 12 items to donate. And then 12 items that you may have laying around in clutter that you want to keep.
But put them back where they belong. They need a home. Yes. OK.
I think about this goes to my house. When I walk in my house, everybody shoes. Like, I'm like, why are there eight pairs of shoes right now? We need to keep on just putting them up.
You know, that's part of clutter. So we have to decide where up is. We have to determine where everything's going to go. Everything needs a home.
It does. Yes. So the 12, 12 challenge. This could be maybe an easy way to start if you're not sure what to do.
But OK, 12 items to throw away. This could be stacks of newspapers, stacks of magazines. I don't know. Does that mean 12?
We're starting out kind of high. 12 is not that much if you get to think about it. 12 things to donate, which could be 12. She was on the 12.
That's my favorite number on our own. And 12 things to send back. Put them in their place. OK.
And then I think this is a great idea. Because it's easy when you're at home every day. You know what it looks like you live there. You don't pay attention.
Come in your house and look at it as if you were a visitor in your own home. Well, you know, as we've been moving and we're getting ready to renovate our house. And I've really been looking on like, oh my gosh, like Disney's painted. This needs a new curtain.
Like is this what people see? Yes. You know, so come in and treat your home like you're a guest. And what is your first impression?
What do you notice? Take a good look. And then the things that you notice that you can part with, part with it. 12 of them.
Yes. I think this is good to take a before and after picture. If there's one area you want to work on, so you can see the difference it makes. OK, I can get with that.
You know, think about your closet. How many times have you done something and you did a really good job on it. And you're like taking a picture before I did this. Yes, or if you clean out a bookshelf or your shoes, you know, like you have a huge pile of shoes in your closet.
Well, get rid of what you don't want, organize it, take a before and after picture. And you'll see the difference it makes. Look, I couldn't do this clean by myself. My mom is a great organizer.
So it's also a good idea. Get help from a brand. If you've got somebody that loves to organize or that, you know, is not emotionally attached to everything in your home, they can come in and help you make a decision on what you want to keep and what you don't want to keep and maybe how to better organize it. I think about a scene from the movie, Sex and the City, when Carrie was getting ready to get married and she was getting ready to move out of her place and she had her friends come over because she had to clean out all of these clothes and she had like a little fashion show.
So she'd come out of these clothes and they would vote on whether she could keep the outfit or it had to go. That's the scene that came into my mind. So getting some help partying with those things that are dear to us is sometimes necessary. Right.
You know, I think it's a great idea to get some help because I, you know, people are looking at it from another point of view and that's always a helpful thing. Yeah. And finally, the author of this journal suggests, if you don't like the 1212, okay, Meddude, you can use the four box method. Okay, four is lower than 12.
So you're gonna get four boxes, you're gonna label them. But one is trash, one is giveaway, one is keep and one is relocate. So pick a room in your house. It doesn't matter where.
You can start in any room of your home but you're gonna assess everything in there and decide which box it goes in. Okay. And relocate, you can relocate it somewhere else in your home or you can relocate it. Just nobody else's home.
Yes. You know, but if you really come in and take an assessment and see what you've got, you can decide if there's some things that you wanna keep or part with. So I don't know. It's just, I just been how I've been living lately.
So it's really on my mind. And y'all, like we said at the beginning of this, it's very relieving and refreshing to get rid of some stuff. And a lot of the things that are still nice and new, I've donated to various agencies that somebody else can enjoy now. Right.
You know, somebody else can wear the clothes. Exactly. Yeah. So we all need to turn on the black eyed keys and we need to pump it and get the decluttering, I guess.
Yes. You know, and start small. Pick one of those tips we just talked about and start with them and go from there. So we don't need to wait till spring to do cleaning.
We can do fall cleaning. You can clean anytime. We can clean anytime we want to. So with that being said, thank you for joining us for this episode and in the words of Bob Marley.
Now, I bet he didn't have a lot of stuff cluttering up around him. I wouldn't imagine. Probably just minimal things. What do you need it?
And I'm with that. I'm on that Bob. Well, he wants to live the life you love. And love the life you love.
Happy decluttering.
