I can only focus on the bicycle music with an adventure Sitting right in the silent movie The sadie on the gooey bitty of the mirror I can't go to the side of prison Every nose I'm on the case of I can only focus on the bicycle Breathe home with Sarah and Neil Sarah, we got the music today Yeah, I don't know where you found that I don't either but it's the red hot chili peppers and it's the bicycle song Well that is the first for me listening to the song Hey we love to introduce our listeners to the music and this is May of Horse and it's National Bike Month Okay, well you're very excited about that and this song is fitting and just last week we were talking about what month is this? Yeah, National Physical Fitness and Sports Month Okay, well, bicycling fits right into this or is it cycling? Is it bicycling? I'm not sure, right in a bike It's the perfect thing to do to fit in and Friday is a very special day in the middle of National Bike Month Okay, it is, it's Bike to Work Day Now that's not gonna be safe for everybody, right?
Oh definitely not for me I'm gonna have to work I don't think you have to wind up No, I might not make it here No, but for those who can and think it's a great idea It's Bike to Work Day, so that'll be a good way to get in some exercise because of the little business I think, you know, when you go visit like big cities and stuff it's awesome to see how many people are riding their bikes instead of, you know, cars or public transportation Yeah, the bike rentals I love where they have the public places where you get in the bicycles It's really so cool But you know, around here we don't have as many of those and a lot of people have their own bicycles So there's some stuff you need to check if you haven't been on your bike since last year, last spring or summer or if you hadn't been on there any longer than that So it's as easy as ABC to get started We gotta check the A, B and the C So the A is the Air, of course not much tires Right Now, I just have to be honest, I don't ride a bike anymore like I used to, but checking the air in the tires wasn't something that was a regular maintenance thing That's the car, not the bike But it needs to be for the bike Right, because tires do get damaged over time and if it's been put up for a long time it may have some dry rot and things like that So you would definitely want to check that out before you just hop on This could be dangerous, just like riding your car on tires that are not safe, riding a bike on tires that are unsafe Yeah, definitely need to check the air or it could be a small lake that can easily be fixed or any time for some new bike tires Okay, without the B Alright, B it's for brakes Oh, we need those I'm not feeling stopped, right? Yeah, we do Yeah, and this is probably another one that we don't often think about but the pads on your brakes really need to be replaced when less than a quarter of an inch remains I have never looked at that before I haven't either No, okay But you should be able to fit your thumb between the brake lever on the handlebar when brakes are squeezed all the way Oh, so if you can't fit your thumb in there it's probably time to replace them Yeah, it does look that And a lot of larger cities even some mid-sized cities out here in West Tennessee have bike shops Oh, yeah, yeah You know, you could go and get that checked out too For sure, okay, and the C is for your chain And I know about the bike chain It doesn't need to be rusty then have you to have a gunky stuff on it because your chain has to keep things rolling That's right, that keeps it all happening That's what keeps it happening So I know about the chain and I did use to check the chain So I know about that So even if you don't ride anymore but your children do, you need to make sure that these things are in work in order before they get going Check the ABCs for sure What about bike helmets, Sarah? Well, this is so important This probably is the most important Now we didn't have it We have over a little week now Okay, I was gonna say I didn't have it We should not because how many bike racks you do Oh my goodness I still have scar Most of the scars I have are from bike racks We ride all days Yes, yes, but we know more now We know more now And a helmet is needed for everyone Whether you're adult or child When you're doing any kind of wheeled activity So that's when you're riding a scooter, a skateboard You're roller skating, any of that stuff Anything with the wheels on it You need to have one helmet Yes, it's so true I mean, I just can't imagine You know, we think something small It's not gonna be a big deal But it is, you need to have a good, well fit helmet For each person And properly fit helmets Reduce the risk of head injury back at least 45% And that's huge A big one But on the flip of that Less than half of children 14 and under wear one Less than half Well, I agree with that Because you think about just in your neighborhood And just driving around Most of the kids you see riding bikes Don't necessarily have a helmet on And I'll be honest, I was more adamant about it When my kids are younger than I am now Yeah, and you're probably concerned That they didn't ride their bikes well either It's the only one The fall was Yeah, it was probably gonna happen But um, wow Now let me give you this statistic From safekids.org Every hour Nearly 50 children In the United States go to the ER With a bike, scooter or skating related injury So I mean it's happening It's happening Um, you know, kids are getting hurt So your helmet needs to fit properly It needs to clear your eyes You know, you don't wanna block their vision Because the helmet doesn't fit right That's a whole other issue So when you've got your helmet on You should be able to have two fingers With above your eyebrows Between your eyebrows and the helmet So that way you've got a clear field of vision While you're riding the bike That's a good frame of reference Yeah, we can all do that And then you tighten it as needed Under your goal Yes, and the fun thing is Now about helmets They are so many to pick from You know, let your kid go and pick out one And I know when my daughter was younger She got a new bike She, you know that pink-alicious I don't, I'm sorry That's about this little girl who loves pink Okay, and then in other books She likes purple and all that Okay But she is mainly in the pink And we found a pink-alicious helmet Wow And she loved wearing it Like it was not a fight Okay, but if you just got her a solid black helmet She would not have loved it Okay, there would be a pushback So they're more like you just point it out They're more happy More positive to wear it if I pick it out I mean I'm saying I'm now with like Dinosaurs spikes coming out of the top Oh, like crazy hair coming out of the top Okay And there's something other for every kid So take them and if you're going by a new bike Don't forget to pick up the helmet And let them pick it out Okay, that sounds good We talk about letting the kids pick out what foods to try And new fruits and vegetables So hey, let them pick out the helmet So let's go over just a few more tips Since this is fight month and we want everybody out there either But we want them to do it safely You know make sure the bike's the right size for each family member And that's important You should be able to sit on the bike And your feet touch the ground They need to be able to touch the ground I see a lot of kids The bikes a little big form in there on their tippy toes It's hard for them to bounce it Yes it is So that's definitely a really good consideration That you mentioned The only thing to do is to dress appropriately We don't want to wear anything that's longer loose That can get called up in the tire of the spokes Or the chain, you know it calls a fall And if you're riding in the evening Which a lot of us do We get home from work And supper, hey it's still light outside Let's go for a ride Wear light colors or even something with a reflective piece to it So that you can be seen in an early morning or in the evening And I see that in my neighborhood I see a lot of the reflectors You can put them on your bike too And on your helmet You know And some people get lights That they put on their bikes and helmets as well And this is something I've always got to be used about But you ride on the side of the street or the side of the road With the traffic Not against it And see in my mind I'm thinking you need to be against it So you can see the car is coming at you But that's not the right way to do it You follow the rules of the road Correct And so you're supposed to ride on the same side As the car is going the same direction That you're going to Because you're on a moving object Now you walk against it But you ride with it But that's really important When I actually tried somebody coming to work this morning And they were riding there like with the traffic So you know I pay attention to those kinds of things Yeah And on that note You need to teach your kids the rules of the road If you're going to be on the road Even in your neighborhood Even in the cold Or whatever They need to know stop sounds That means stop Traffic signals If you're going somewhere you're crossing a street They need to know when to go What yield means They need to know the traffic rules They also need to learn about looking right and left You know those kinds of things If they're going to be on a bike in the street They need to know the rules of the street For sure And just like anything else I think they're safety and numbers When it comes to riding bikes You know Encourage kids to ride together And then as a parent You know actively supervise them And you know you are comfortable That they can safely ride on their own And I mean back to safe kids They say that age 10 is when most kids can judge speed And distance when it comes to cars But that's going to vary my child I mean don't just say Well he's 10 today so I got to stay home and let him ride You know your child and their capabilities That's right So you definitely want to make sure That they know how to do it safely Before you just let them have at it And the more you are out riding with them As they grow up You're going to notice You'll notice And they're going to do what you do So if you stop at the crosswalk It'll look both ways Before going They'll be more apt to do that Okay You know So then you can also gauge Their progression Maybe let them ride ahead of you a little bit Yeah See what they do Do we have to watch for texting and biking? Do people do that?
Oh gosh probably I mean I just wondered if that really Flowing to text and drive You know they do text and viking Okay So don't text and viking I mean you need to pay attention to what's going on You know just again I'm like you'll be hag here Take them early and go ride with them Or even walk and let them like I said Go a little bit ahead Hey I'm going to catch them and do walking Just ride back around here where I can see you Wear your helmet, follow traffic rolls When you bike and drive You know because they're watching Yeah you know if you're in your car And you're in your seat bike People ride their bikes Well respond to that appropriately You know give them some room So your kids know what to do In those situations And that can be a conversation starter If you're out driving with your child And someone's riding their bicycle If they're doing something correctly Or if they're doing something incorrectly That would be a good time to discuss that That actually happened in my car not too long ago At a four-way stop the child did not follow the rules of the road And I was coming up to the four-way stop And the child didn't stop And crossed right in front of my car And I've not been looking Something bad could have happened And my kids were like And stop He's got to stop and like you're right Good thing that I was paying for you So yeah you make a very good point It's a good conversation starter It helps him to learn and see what could happen potentially So get out and ride that bike The weather's good It's national physical fitness and sports month It's national bike month So I think all of these things are telling us To get out and get moving And ride a bike If you hadn't done it a long time start off slow And just you know it's like riding a little bit Well never mind You'll pick it up So thanks for listening And the words above Wait a minute Nah I bet he rode a bike I'm sure he did the weather was so nice And I bet he loved riding a bike Hopefully he followed all of these guidelines But he would want you to look at it And he would want you to look at it And he would want you to look at it And he would want you to live the life you love And love the like you live Happy biking! I bet he loved riding a bike And he would want you to live the life you love And love the like you live Happy biking!
