I'll be my picture, my mind, the proofs I'm searching for will be making soon. I'll be developing my picture of the girl I'm on, soon I will see. Bringing it home with Sarah and to Neil. Sarah.
That's an oldie isn't it? Oh it is an oldie. A great way to kind of take me out isn't it? Well I think most of our listeners probably recognize that voice.
Oh that is George Jones. Yes. I'm going to ask the possum. And in 1966 he released a song called Developing My Pictures.
Developing My Pictures. I'm not familiar with that one. Oh he was in his dark room and he was developing his pictures. That sounds like a pretty interesting hobby to have.
Speaking of hobbies here on Bringing Home with Sarah and to Neil. Since spring is here in full effect and summer is really really soon. It's time to talk about some low cost or no cost hobbies that we can take on this year. Okay and I'm thinking the first one we're going to talk about with the song choice is photography.
You know people are looking for something new to get into. But you know everything is high prices are up. So with these things we're not going to have to spend a bundle on. And you know most of us have a smartphone.
You can get into photography using gesture smartphone. You can use a free page on a social media site to promote your work. Case and point my brother promoted his wonderful photography on a social media page. And I mean didn't cost any money when he would take a picture that he wanted to share with the world.
He put it there. He had a lot of fans and followers and that was a good place for it. That's cool. So even if you don't want to share it with a whole lot of people and you can just put it there just for your own reference or for your family and friends.
Keep up with it. You know most of our phones or tablets or whatever have really good built in like editing. All the time. So if you want to play around with it there's a lot of free stuff like that out there too.
Out there. You're paying for your phone anyway. Yeah you said if a talker is something you want to get into you can take pictures of people of nature of you know things you know whatever whatever types of things. Guys the limit.
Yes. Another thing my family loves to do spring summer fall probably not so much the winter but we want to go hiking. We just like to be outside. I know this is not a kind of great view of doing so.
No but a lot of people do. And I mean this seems like a hobby that people can do. Now does it cost a lot of money? No.
You know you got to have some good shoes and then I want to like the day of just some snacks and everything. Well you're probably going to snack anyway. You're going to snack. But what we like to do you know when you live in an area where there's a lot of state parks that are free to use and have a lot of hiking trails.
So we'll just go try out a new one. Take our lunch and hang out. It's a lot of fun. We've visited some really cool places.
You can take some great photos. You can come by these two. Yeah. And you're getting some good exercise and supporting your local state parks.
A lot of communities have places that you can go and walk, community I live in. We have some trails that you can go and hike that are free. So yeah. And explore where you live.
Okay. So there you go. It doesn't cost a lot of money. Now something that I really got more into during the pandemic was try new recipes.
And the reason for that is that we were shut up in the house and we were cooking all of our meals at home. You got tired of cooking the same thing. And so I decided I was going to try a couple of brand new recipes each week. And so you can search the web for free.
There are literally millions and millions of recipes. So if you find one ingredient, you know, if you've got blueberries and you want blueberry recipes, I guarantee you'll find so many pages of them. So you know, that's something you're going to eat anyway. You got to plan meals anyway.
So why not try to incorporate something new? Yeah. And use the seasonal foods that are starting to come in. Like the fresh stuff.
Yeah. I think that's a great idea. Another one is crafting. Now I know you and I, this is not how I really see them.
But we have friends that do it. We know some things better than others when it comes to crafting. You know, but scrapbooking. You've mentioned.
I use this crap with a lot actually. I have not in the past several years, but I actually have three volumes of scrapbooks that I've been, you know, not. I thought I knew it all. No, but scrapbooking is something that I really enjoyed picking out the paper and picking out the little, you know, things I'm going to use.
Yes, I enjoyed that. Surprising to me. Once upon a time. Yes.
I have to show you something. Please do. So there's that, you know, origami paper arts of who doesn't like, I know somebody that's making back bombs or candles, things like that. There's a whole lot of different crashing get into.
Again, there's a million and one the DIY videos on how to do this. Yes. You know? But you don't necessarily have to go paper and class.
Because you can watch it online. Right. Or maybe you have a friend that goes how to do it and you want to learn from them. So gardening, you know, it's the time of year for that to be full force.
So if you want to have the whole shebang and have a huge in-ground garden, you can do a raised bed garden, or you could scale it back and do a container garden. If you don't have the room or the confidence to do the full scale garden, you know, do some herbs and containers or just do a few little plants. Yeah, you can do some tomatoes and the container easily. Yeah, yeah.
Don't feel like you've got a tail of half your garden to have gardening because you don't hold so. We've got the raised beds in our house, but also if you are into flowers, now's the time to probably already have put a lot of stuff in the ground, your annuals and things like that. So you can go crazy. You can.
Now another thing that you can go crazy doing is learning a new language. Now I have seen so many promotions and hard promotions for this. There are apps now that you can get and learn a language. It used to be you would learn one if you were thinking of going to that country one day.
You don't have to be planning to go anywhere. It just broadens your horizons and it made you in a better position career wise to know what other language or whatever the situation is. That's a worthwhile hobby to have. It's kind of stretch your brain power there.
You can practice that while you have a commute that takes a while or at the time. That's just something you can kind of branch out and do. Definitely. Well, if you ever read like I do, you can find you a book club in person at your local library, with a group of friends or virtual ones you can join, 10-year-olds and after our workplace, there's book clubs that we can join to meet via Zoom, like you're in a lunch hour.
So your place of work may offer that as well. If it doesn't, maybe you can start one if you're the reading guru at your place. So that may be something that you want to jump into. My mom said, why does she loves it?
They meet once a month. Yeah, no. What is that? Like the cost of the book?
Or you can check some book out? Yeah, it's the book. You know, but it's just get together. Now, they meet a different person's house each month and just in the afternoon for an hour or two.
Yeah. Just enjoy that. So you can make it virtual, you can make it in person, you can meet at the park. If it's nice, you know.
But check your local library. A lot of them have book clubs as well. This is something else I know that your mom likes to do and that's yoga. And I know she actually likes to go to a yoga class, but there are also options for joining yoga virtually.
And I say yoga, but there are other things. You know, other, you know, you could probably do a Tai Chi class. We offer Tai Chi. Extension offers Tai Chi.
There are a variety of different workouts and things that you can do. And then why Robix? Yeah. That you can do right at home.
Oh yeah, Tera Robix. Yeah. You can find apps for all of those. You can find them on YouTube.
Yeah. All of those things. Just get started. That's all it takes.
Yeah. And then there are some community centers in some areas that you can go to for very low cost. Oh yeah. Maybe like five or ten dollars a time.
Absolutely. Yep. We talked about this earlier in May because it's actually bike month. So I think we talked about a bike every week.
It's crazy. We never talked about it. I'm like, yeah. But you know, why not?
Yeah. I mean, maybe this is a sign we talked about it every week. If I was a relatively inexpensive. Yeah.
And that's something you can do individually or with a group. You know, just make sure, listen to our podcast from a couple of weeks ago and make sure you're doing it safely. Yeah. That's true.
That is something that you can rediscover by getting if you haven't done it in a while. And you know, one of my mom's favorite things to do for her hobby, not just in spring, she loves puzzles. She actually loves jigsaw puzzles. But she loves to do crossword puzzles and word searches.
Oh, I love it. I mean, she can just lose herself and do these for a long period of time. I know a lot of us do our daily wirtel, you know, something that just kind of stretches your brain a little bit. So we've talked about being physically active, but we also want to keep our minds active.
And so these are hobbies, but they're also ways to kind of keep our brain working. Right. We don't want to be idle. You know, there's a ton of rest, but we want to stay busy doing things that we choose to do.
Yeah. You know, a lot of our days, especially those of us that are still in the workforce is playing for us. Right. So on our downtime, our hobbies, I need to be things that we want to do.
Wirtel is mine. I want to do that. I do that because I want to. I love it.
Well, let's name it books. Yes. And hiking. My family likes to do that.
Yes. Yes. You know, pick what's fun for you, because if it's not fun, you're not going to do it. Right.
And you could probably think of some hobby ideas that we didn't even mention that may not cost you a penny. Or it may be something that's important enough to you that you want to put into your budget. So that you'll have money to invest in it. But whatever the case, having a hobby is healthy for us mentally.
We need to have an outlet, something that we enjoy doing, like you said, because we want to do it and not because it's required on us. Yes. So get out and find some fun to know, guys. Yes.
Definitely do that. Thank you for listening to this episode. In the words of Bob Marley, live the life you love. And love the life you love.
Happy, Happy.
