bring it home with sarah and teniel hey sarah hey it sounds like we're celebrating the 80s today actually we're not oh that's the weekend and i'll tell you i don't know that song either but it's called uh blinding lights and what's so special about this song it is the most streamed song on spotify ever that's interesting it is it came out right before the pandemic and it stayed on the top 10 for like a year wow the weekend doing good things yeah yes definitely so when you're not streaming the week oh by the way who do you think is the top streamed artist of all time on spotify um well i mean let me give you a hint she's on a world tour oh it's got to be yes it's got to be okay so i can totally see that yes we can see that but this song people like yeah makes you like it way back today it does yes so that's streaming music another thing that people are streaming this summer is movies television shows anything that you can stay inside in the air conditioning instead of going out kids are home now too and that more so they're probably you know they're all addicted to their devices so they're streaming stuff too but think about everything is so instant now yeah i mean our parents did not have the ability to entertain us no we had good imaginations and played outside yes but that's a podcast i'll be for another day it really is we want to talk about summer streaming and everybody just kind of find out where they fit into all of this because big money's being spent it's really shocking um just this year alone 2024 brands have spent over 30 billion dollars on streaming advertisements that's a lot of money that is but let me tell you about some more money okay compare that to what it's been on traditional tv ads that's coming in at a whopping um 60 billion dollars that sounds like a super bowl all that money i know that is insane um and even on streaming advertising and i get really frustrated when i'm streaming and they get what i push an ad my way but i think it's important that they do this because 99 of homes subscribe to at least one streaming service now yeah are you guys in the 99 or are you in the one i didn't think we were but as you and i talked a few minutes ago i think we are because we don't watch a lot of tv as you know but we do actually uh watch them on amazon prime so yeah well it gets harder and harder sometimes to find things to watch so when we get these streaming services we can search more options and find something that we want to watch because americans are watching they spend and i'm talking about american adults spend an average of three hours and nine minutes streaming every day and that's one of the fours that's one of the fours it's really not think about our parents when they would come home from work they would put the tv on and the tv pretty much stayed on in my house until it starts with the news and then they go to a game show and then go to you know so three hours could literally be six to nine that's true that's true but you know streaming now i don't think i'll stream three hours because there are some shows that i watch that still come on regular television oh yeah i 100 agree so i can't see that i stream three hours a day but some people that's how they get their tv that's true that's all they have and i really want to go back to 99 because to me like that is reaching across multiple generations oh yeah so this isn't just targeting you know the digital age well now do your parents stream they do have some okay they still have traditional tv but they do give that up no and i'm probably not either no no that's crazy yeah that's big money that's big money so that's why they're spending all that money on advertising so who do you think which platform um has the most subscribers and it's the one you hear the most probably because they release a lot of their own it's used as a bird now i did another contest it is it's gotta be netflix it is and they've got over 260 million subscribers as of right now so i mean netflix and that's for the older ones you've been hearing netflix for a long time so it's been around for a while like i said it's now used as a verb you don't hear anybody saying they're gonna amazon prime something but honestly amazon prime is second and i think you mentioned that you have that we have that um it's the second and then disney plus is the third one which we can understand that because you know there are so many there are movies for adults and then there are kids shows a lot of different things on disney plus so those are kind of our top three but as you know there are a lot of them and before you know it you can have multiple screaming screaming you can scream at some of the movies but you can have multiple streaming services and look it adds up too the average american spends 46 a month on streaming the average so some people spend more well you know what happens is i've got one show that comes on netflix so i gotta have it then i know that hulu is going to start a show so i have that one but then my netflix show is gone and i don't always think to well i can go back and cancel that but i'm not watching anything else right and then before you know it you got multiple things and that's really into your budget you don't watch it yeah and the prices have started going up on most of them right most of these services 45 of americans i'm still quoting forwards here have canceled a service because of high prices i've done that yeah i had one that just kept increasing kept increasing and i had to analyze and say how much i'm really watching yeah on this service and it turned out that i just needed to let it go well i think we've all done that only 45 of us yeah i'm gonna say 55 but this is crazy okay let me give you up because you like statistics so to be in the harris poll uh did a survey all right this is nuts to me because everybody complains about gas prices but nobody complains about their streaming prices because they don't watch their tv listen to this okay here we go okay americans are spending an average of 119.76 a month on streaming video services uh-uh not spend that much all right compare that to what the average consumption of gas prices are is 112 dollars a month so people are spending more money on their streaming services than they are on their gas but you know everybody in their mom complains about the gas prices yes yes people still are gonna pay for their streaming and i have to walk back what i just said we don't spend that much on streaming but we still have traditional television also so we're spending way more than that right uh total but that is why we don't want to buy gas we like our shows but you like to go girl let me just tell you i just did a quick math that's 231 a month to watch tv and gas your car so to me i gotta have gas and i gotta go to work you know and i gotta go to the store and all that but do i really want to spend 120 bucks a month people are gonna pay that bill so that is 1400 a year but really this poll that you're talking about we're gonna reference that quite a bit here going forward um 83 percent of the people who responded they say they would cut ties with a streamer if they up the prices i've done that yeah and you know i threaten sometimes it's like this goes again i'm gonna let it go and not yet but there's some others that i might have to let go yeah well i've done that actually with this is not video but in my heart a music service i know and i'm still holding on to that one but but anyway it's the same thing because we say if they up our price we're not doing this i know but we keep doing it so this poll was by 2b and i'm not surprised that 2b is the most watched streaming service because it's free that's why we find things to watch on 2b it doesn't cost us anything uh we joke if anybody watches 2b you may have noticed that they kind of changed their logo their whole design and we were like uh-oh i think they're gonna start charging for all these changes do you guys have 2b do you watch 2b no everybody has 2b yeah we haven't but again we don't just watch a whole lot of tv i mean we watch tv but we don't care as much right no i understand what you're saying but it doesn't surprise me this is the most watched it doesn't cost anybody anything so and of the people that 2b surveyed 65 percent of them were using at least one streaming service and you say at least one it could be one or it could be 12 right so that doesn't really give us a good picture of how many streaming services people are using i thought this was interesting that more than a third of these people that were surveyed want those traditional commercial breaks like regular tv does and i'll be honest when i'm watching stuff and it just cuts off in the middle of a scene because of an ad it makes me mad i know that it's not well placed we didn't roll that way now i guess these kids won't know a difference but no i like the commercial breaks because if i need to go to my water bottle i need to go to the restroom grab a snack whatever i need to do that i know about how much time i have to do that like three to four minutes yes and they get back and you know here we go right right well i'll tell you this the same whole three fours other people would stream with other people as a form of quality time they do this but when they look at the younger people okay they ask the younger people over half of them said that they prefer to stream with people who do not live in their household so the kids are not going to stream with their parents half of them the other half they're good but half of them say i'd rather be with people not living yeah are you going to watch something i don't want to watch though let's go you know i just thought that was funny they don't they want to be with the people we live with yeah well i can totally get this 52 percent of people that are binge watching are doing it at night well i'm gonna see that we get on the couch on my blanket that's what i have to do it you know but now the weekends um i think i definitely do more binging on the weekends than i do at night usually i'm pretty spent and i'm not looking to you know see but our weekends are so passionate stuff right now it's hard to read well i've been there but yeah or if it's like a rainy day or cold day sure yeah like give me a saturday with a blanket and a good show for sure i'm more likely to be watching weekends than i am at night more uninterrupted time that's true now 96 so almost everybody um loves to watch older shows that give them nostalgia they can take back to their childhood and all this and i'm just like this it's probably not a day that goes by that i don't see at least parts of an old show this is on regular television right that i like to watch that's true you know i'm just gonna name some of them i love to see the golden girls come across i love to watch mama's family a different world all of those things yeah and apparently 96 of these people had shows you know my husband he's a big little house on the prairie no i never watch her he loves that show he can watch it all day that's hilarious i know i figured you wouldn't know that no well we watch um gun smoke which is way back okay he'll watch that too he likes the rifleman better oh okay well we'll have to talk about that so i mean there we go we're getting all excited about this because it's bringing back memories yeah i tell you that one too so yeah there's a lot of them out there that's the feel good but now i thought this was interesting that almost half of the people feel pressure to watch a certain show just so they can say hello what other people are talking about have you done that before have you ever heard so much chatter about something you're like i've got to find out what these people are talking about i'll just google it stuff i'll watch a few clips i'm good oh my goodness i don't have that fomo about about but i know you do i do but now i'm not 10 when i watch it i'm going no but i have to see what everybody's talking about yeah now here's one show that i did tune into because of the hype and it was not i lived up to it and that was um oh tell me what it is everybody was watching everybody but me i know everybody was watching i remember you talking about this i was late to the party though i was late to the party it was already this is us it was already gone off the air when we started binging it but it was totally worth it so i wanted to be in on whatever i was talking especially when the crop pot episode happened and everybody was like and i'm thinking wait a minute i gotta watch this it's a crop pot in it so anyway well it's funny because we said that about people like to watch stuff but also on that same uh token a quarter or three-fourths of people want original content they want to see some new stuff so they like their nostalgia but they also want to see some new stuff you know what i don't want you to remake the stuff that i like yeah i got an issue but it's never gonna be the same you're not gonna get the same feeling even if they do a great job with it you're not gonna feel the same about it because there's a lot of reboots in the last years there are a lot and i just you know now that's what i probably don't get into is the reboots even game shows have you noticed that all the game shows that we grew up with they're all back everything is like it they're all back um so yeah game show may be a little different but when they like rework your favorite sitcoms and put different actors it doesn't feel right no it doesn't so i can understand why they say that but you know one thing that i really liked about this poll almost three four said they want to see some content from smaller and indie creators and i think that's neat you know not just like a big companies it would be good if we could stream more from you know independent actors yeah i think so too that and honestly today's role where you can go put yourself out there a little easier you can be make a name for yourself and they can you know have a step into the industry if that's what they want to do but there's a lot creativity and talent out there that we don't need to see if we don't have the you know people that are willing to show this kind of stuff so that was really no point to this podcast we just wanted to talk about you know how people are streaming this summer and how much money really goes into the streaming game yeah they want you to watch yes they want you to watch and it sounds like one of these poll numbers that we are watching and well sarah's not watching sarah's not watching but the rest of us are watching and we're waiting to see what the next big thing is gonna be now i will say this there were some that came out that everybody was talking about that i had no desire to watch i just knew they weren't my thing right you know um the one that everybody's watching now that i have not watched one episode of i may change this is bridging okay i haven't heard about it and you know they're based on books and you know me i'll go yeah you'd rather read the book so anyway but thank you for joining us for this pointless episode of bringing home with sarah and neil in the words of bob marley oh yeah he didn't have to deal with any of this you just turned on and watched whatever happened but either way he wants you to live the life you love and love the life you live happy streaming
