Britain's Warning to the American Church

from Uncommon Sense in Current Times

Britain possesses one of the richest Christian histories in the Western world, but history cannot keep a church faithful. Peter Demos examines declining Church of England attendance, parish consolidation, clergy shortages and police action involving Christian street preachers. The financial problems are serious. Fewer worshippers mean less giving, and fewer priests mean larger parish structures. Yet Peter argues that the deeper problem cannot be solved by reorganizing churches or preserving historic buildings. The church must recover confidence in Scripture and proclaim Jesus Christ without fear. Peter also considers the Church Commissioners' £100 million response to historic links with African chattel enslavement. He distinguishes institutional payments from biblical repentance, which requires acknowledging sin and turning away from it. The episode concludes with the withdrawal of the Bible Society's Quiet Revival report after YouGov found serious problems in the underlying survey data. Christians cannot lower their standard of truth because they prefer a particular conclusion. The church does not need favorable statistics to make Jesus credible. 📘 Get my latest book "Bold Not Belligerent" on Amazon: 👉 https://a.co/d/eGTPSYS 🔗 Follow Peter Demos: 🌐 Website: https://www.peterdemos.org/📱 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peterdemosofficial 📘 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/peterdemosofficial 𝕏 Twitter/X: https://x.com/peter_demos In this conversation: Britain's Christian heritage Street preaching and religious expression Church of England attendance decline Parish mergers and the shortage of priests Institutional Christianity versus gospel proclamation The meaning of biblical repentance The withdrawn Quiet Revival report Lessons for Christians in the United States Are Christians trying to preserve Christianity as an institution, or are we faithfully proclaiming Christ as Lord?
