British Science Week special

from The Careers Podcast · host Silje Howes / LMI UK

Dr Ben Miles of Spin Up Science joins us to chat about the vital skills and attitudes needed for a career in science.  As Ben says on their website : Across the UK, there is a high attrition rate of scientists and engineers leaving their field leading to a shortage in the high tech labour force. A publication by the Royal Society estimates that 53% of postgraduate researchers completing a PhD abandon their discipline within one year of graduating; a trend driven by the low availability of academic positions and the reluctance to enter industrial placements through the traditional graduate-scheme pathways. He talks through the ethos of Spin Up Science, the idea of crossing the scientist / entrepreneur divide and what it takes to get from lab discoveries to real world solutions. This is great advice for anyone considering work in science. There's some great pointers and resources at Spin Up's website.
