Thad Jones was known as 'the middle brother' between Hank Jones, the pianist and Elvin Jones, the drummer. Thad is better known as a composer/bandleader/arranger but tonight's Feature focuses on his brass-proud,original trumpet playing. Charles Mingus was one of Thad's biggest fans and supporters and Mingus called Thad, 'the Bartok of the trumpet.....Bartok with valves'. We hear Thad in the company of fellow Detroiters, Billy Mitchell on tenor saxophone and Barry Harris on piano, plus Percy heath on bass and the late great Max roach on drums. Thad's second Blue Note album was appropriately called "THe Magnificent Thad Jones".
