Brother Jacob Chapter I

In which a young and ambitious confectioner's apprentice, David Faux, struggles with the limitations of his chosen trade and the social barriers that confine him, leading him to scheme an escape to America by appropriating money from his mother’s secret savings. His careful plan is complicated by the involvement of his simple-minded but unpredictable brother Jacob, whose innocent interference foils David's attempts at discreet departure.
