Brother Ray – From Meth, Prison, and Fentanyl to Faith, Family, and a Calling to Serve

Brother Ray grew up in the rough corridors of Phoenix surrounded by addiction, violence, and instability, with parents cycling in and out of prison and a childhood marked by foster care, chaos, and survival. As a teenager he dropped out of school, started selling meth, and was pulled deeper into the streets, guns, and gang culture that eventually led to an armed robbery case and a multi‑year prison sentence.Inside prison, Ray’s addiction escalated into heroin, his anger toward God hardened, and politics and drugs became his way of coping—but his family never stopped showing up for him, making sure he had commissary even when he used it to fuel his habit. When he was finally released, he came home determined not to go back, but alcohol, meth, and later fentanyl quickly dragged him and his wife into another cycle of violence, overdoses, probation violations, and repeated trips in and out of treatment.In this episode of Recovery On‑Air, Ray shares how a desperate car‑ride prayer and a worship song (“Rescue Story” by Zach Williams) became a turning point that opened him back up to God and led him into church, discipleship, and genuine accountability through sponsors, men’s groups, and the Twelve Steps.
